Gerald Volkmer untersucht diese Beziehungen und die daraus hervorgegangenen völkerrechtlichen Verträge sowie die Siebenbürgen betreffenden Bestimmungen der habsburgisch-osmanischen Friedensverträge. Das im Donau-Karpatenraum entstandene Gleichgewicht zwischen Wien und Konstantinopel schuf die Voraussetzungen für die Völkerrechtssubjektivität des Fürstentums und bestimmte die Grenzen seines außenpolitischen Handlungsspielraums. Die Schaukelpolitik der siebenbürgischen Fürsten zwischen den beiden benachbarten Imperien endete mit dem Sieg des Kaisers im 'Großen Türkenkrieg' und der völkerrechtlichen Eingliederung Siebenbürgens in den habsburgischen Länderkomplex 1699. Mit dieser Monografie wird erstmals eine Gesamtdarstellung der völkerrechtlichen Stellung des teilsouveränen Fürstentums Siebenbürgen zwischen christlich-abendländischer und islamisch-osmanischer Völkerrechtsordnung sowie seiner Völkerrechtspraxis vorgelegt.
