"Polymorphic ferns of Western Ghats, South India is a book with complete details on the taxonomy, cytology and ecology of ten species complexes of ferns. Approximately about 20 different morphological characters have been studied in about 1000specimens, a result of intensive field work. The extent of variations in all the species complexes is established for the first time. This would help botanist lacking field knowledge when describing new species and thereby avoid many taxonomic confusions. Western Ghats, South India with high species diversity typifies a tropical region. So far diversity has been known only at the species level and in this book for the first time diversity at the intraspecific level is dealt with. The presumed causative agents of the variations, the environmental and genetical factors are established. The climatic factors such as temperature, rainfall, humidity for a span of 10 years is included. Nomenclatural uncertainties of the ten.

Index to botanical names. "The Nilgiris was identified in 1970 as representative area of the Western Ghats under the UNESCO's Man and Biosphere programme. It is the first biosphere reserve set up in India in 1986. The present work is based on the intense field work personally carried out on the Nilgiris by the authors during 1991-1992 by spending 55 days in the field. This book includes 144 species of Pteridophytes with short description along with identification keys for genera and species and ecological notes. Colour photographs have been provided for important species. Specimen citation has been given for all the species based on our own collections. This is the modern account on the Pteridophyte Flora for this phytogeographically important region. The only previous comprehensive report for the ferns of Nilgiris is by R.H. Beddome (1864). It would be immense use for pteridologists interested in the ferns of the tropics, for research scholars, students and teachers of Pteridology, for forest conservationists and hobbyists.".

Today as the whole world is seriously concerned about the conservation and sustainable utilization of bioresources the dream of Dr. V.S. Manickam and h…is colleagues to bring out a comprehensive taxonomic account of the angiosperm flora of Tirunelveli Hills the Eastern slopes of Agathimalai the Southern most part of Western Ghats with a potential for declaration as biosphere has become a reality. This is the result of continuous fieldwork on these slopes for four full years including 300 field days 13500 field numbers. The team headed by Dr. V.S. Manickam has taken enormous efforts to collect process and identify about 2000 species of angiosperms the identification of all the species was done with meticulous cere checking with the specimens at BST Coimbatore and receiving help from the taxonomic experts and using relevant previous literature particularly the work of G.S. Gamble. The flora incorporates details of geology vegetational types distribution climatology taxonomic account endangered vulnerable and endemic species and species of medicinal and economic importance. The unique feature of this flora is the preparation of taxonomically useful line drawings for all the 2000 species. Much attention is paid to the taxonomic accuracy of all drawings which will enable all research scholars and scientists to identify their collection with case. The volume I Polypetalae includes 667 species in 275 genera and 77 families. The subsequent volumes namely gamopetalae monochlamydae and monocots will appear in print from with short intervals. The production of the Flora of Tirunelveli Hills is a significant milestone in the history of South Indian Botany and will be of use for scholars bioscientist environmentalists conservationist and particularly taxonomists. Each of the 4 volumes includes a number of color photographs so species. 1115 pp.

Hardcover. Condición: New. With the completion of the fourth and final volume, the project to bring out a comprehensive taxonomic account of the angiosperm Flora of Tirunelveli Hills, the Eastern slopes of Agathimalai, and the Southernmost part of the Western Ghats with a potential for declaration as the Biosphere has reached it…s conclusion. Owing to their significant geographic position at the southern end of the Western Ghats and varied climate and altitude, the "Tirunelveli Hills" possess a very rich and diverse flora. A reliable, up-to-date floristic inventory is a pre-requisite for a just assessment of the plant wealth of a given area, more so in a tropical country like India, where population pressure continues to lead to overexploitation and the consequent disappearance of the precious forests. Since Tropical rain forest has entered a period of rapid decline as a world natural resource, the "Tirunelveli Hills" must be regarded as a prime example of this ecosystem in Southern India. The flora incorporates details of geology, vegetational types, distribution, climatology, taxonomic account, endangered, vulnerable, and endemic species, and species of medicinal and economic importance. The unique feature of this flora is the preparation of taxonomically useful line drawings for nearly all the species. Much attention is paid to the taxonomic accuracy of all drawings, which will enable students and scientists to identify taxa not only of the Tirunelveli Hills but also of other areas of Southern India. The production of the Flora of Tirunelveli Hills is a significant milestone in the history of South Indian Botany and will be of use to scholars, bioscientists, environmentalists, conservationists and particularly taxonomists. It is hoped that this work will be of real service to students and teachers of Biology and other local practical plant users in the better understanding and utilisation of the rich biodiversity of the area, leading to rural development. Volume I covers Polypetalae and includes 666 species in 275 genera and 77 families. Volume II covers Gamopetalae and includes 566 species belonging to 26 families. Volume IIII covers Monochlamydeae and includes 278 species in 107 genera belonging to 22 families. Volume IV covers Monocotyledons and includes 421 species belonging to 181 genera and 26 families.
