Es war für die damals in der…DDR schon bekannten Fotografen eine seltene Gelegenheit, einen Blick vor den Eisernen Vorhang werfen zu können. Doch das für 1989 geplante Buch konnte nicht (mehr) erscheinen und teilte das Schicksal vieler Buchprojekte aus der Zeit kurz vor dem Mauerfall. Die Bilder und Kontaktbögen verschwanden in grauen Kisten in einem Archiv in Brandenburg, aus dem sie erst im Jahr 2021 wieder auftauchten. Bei der Sichtung der Bilder wurde klar, dass Lissabon eigentlich das erste gemeinsame Projekt der Mahlers war, lange bevor sie sich erstmals bewusst für eine Co-Autorenschaft entscheiden sollten. Trotzdem ist die gemeinsame Handschrift, die sich in den Monalisen der Vorstädte, Seltsamen Tagen, der Kleinstadt und den Strömen entwickelte, schon klar zu erkennen. Es sind schwarz-weiße Straßenfotografien im besten Sinne, entstanden beim Flanieren in der unbekannten, aber für die kleine Reisegruppe sicherlich faszinierenden Stadt, die rund dreißig Jahre später ganz eigene historische Sichtweisen ermöglicht. Lissabon '87/88 ist ein kleines, wie immer von Florian Lamm sorgfältig gestaltetes Buch.In 1987 and 1988 photographers Ute Mahler and Werner Mahler, together with author Wolfgang Kil, made two trips to Lisbon to photograph and describe the city and its people for a book, to be published by Leipzig Brockhaus. They were already well-known in the GDR, and it was a rare opportunity for them to have a look at the other side of the Iron Curtain. But the book planned for 1989 could no longer be released and thus shared the fate of many similar books from the time shortly before the fall of the Wall. The pictures and contact sheets disappeared into gray boxes in an archive in Brandenburg and did not resurface until 2021. Upon sifting through the images, it became clear that Lisbon was actually their first joint project, long before the Mahlers consciously decided to co-author their joint projects. Nevertheless, the shared signature they developed in Monalises of the Suburbs, Strange Days, Small Town, and Streams is already visible. The Lisbon pictures are black and white street photographs in the best sense, taken while strolling through the city that was unknown yet certainly fascinating to the small group of travelers from East Berlin, and, some thirty years later, provides its very own historical perspectives. A small book, carefully conceived, designed and laid out by Florian Lamm.

Ute and Werner Mahler chose to investigate the demographic phenomenon of small towns in their fourth collaboration following Monalisen der Vorstädte (Mona Lisas of the Suburbs), completed in 2011; Wo die Welt zu Ende war (Where the World Ended), completed in 2012; and seltsame Tage (Strange Days), completed in 2014. Starting in 2012 they traveled around Germany in a small car with a large camera and a supply of black-and-white sheet film in search of images that document the atmosphere, attitude, and spirit of these places.Their concise images freeze time and place, capturing the idea of a small town in a kaleidoscope of images from many small cities, ranging from Bad Gandersheim to Lebach and Zörbig. The future of such small towns will be decided in the next few years. Trotzdem ist die gemeinsame Handschrift, die sich in den Monalisen der Vorstädte, Seltsamen Tagen, der Kleinstadt und den Strömen entwickelte, schon klar zu erkennen. Es sind schwarz-weiße Straßenfotografien im besten Sinne, entstanden beim Flanieren in der unbekannten, aber für die kleine Reisegruppe sicherlich faszinierenden Stadt, die rund dreißig Jahre später ganz eigene historische Sichtweisen ermöglicht. Lissabon '87/88 ist ein kleines, wie immer von Florian Lamm sorgfältig gestaltetes Buch.In 1987 and 1988 photographers Ute Mahler and Werner Mahler, together with author Wolfgang Kil, made two trips to Lisbon to photograph and describe the city and its people for a book, to be published by Leipzig Brockhaus. They were already well-known in the GDR, and it was a rare opportunity for them to have a look at the other side of the Iron Curtain. But the book planned for 1989 could no longer be released and thus shared the fate of many similar books from the time shortly before the fall of the Wall. The pictures and contact sheets disappeared into gray boxes in an archive in Brandenburg and did not resurface until 2021. Upon sifting through the images, it became clear that Lisbon was actually their first joint project, long before the Mahlers consciously decided to co-author their joint projects. Nevertheless, the shared signature they developed in Monalises of the Suburbs, Strange Days, Small Town, and Streams is already visible. The Lisbon pictures are black and white street photographs in the best sense, taken while strolling through the city that was unknown yet certainly fascinating to the small group of travelers from East Berlin, and, some thirty years later, provides its very own historical perspectives. A small book, carefully conceived, designed and laid out by Florian Lamm.

Starting in 2012 they traveled around Germany in a small car with a large camera and a supply of black-and-white sheet film in search of images that document the atmosphere, attitude, and spirit of these places.
