Neuware - The Shoa never was a theme in the works of Ursula Mamlok - with the exception of Rückblick for saxophone and piano which she wrote in 2002 on commission of the Temple University in memory of Kristallnacht. The contrast between slow and fast movements is much more elaborate than in her other works from that period, with the fast movements appearing somewhat driven while the piano part for a few moments adopts an otherwise unknown severity. Near the end of the third movement, cantabile and fleeting gestures are suddenly pushed toward each other. The first fast movement arises from the destruction of attempted cantability. The Elegy (2nd movement) dies away with a four-fold reminder of its initial motif, the last attempt remaining fragmentary. The fourth movement Lament concludes with a figure that returns to its beginning. In addition to the original version with alto saxophone, versions with bass clarinet or for clarinet in Bb are available.Instrumentation:clarinet in Bb and piano; Ursula Mamlok hat in ihren Werken die Schoa nicht thematisiert. Notenblatt. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Cantata for mixed choir and piano (or organ) is an early work by Ursula Mamlok, if you could call the composition of a woman in her mid-thirties early. In 1958, at the time of composition of the piece, the composer had just completed her studies at the Manhattan School of Music. In the following years, while studying with Stefan Wolpe and Ralph Shapey, she turned towards serial technique and developed the style which was to become typical of her in later decades. Cantata is also a musical testimony to a transitional period and takes a special - and very interesting - position, not least because choral compositions are rare in Mamlok's oeuvre. The one-movement composition of almost seven minutes' duration is based on Psalm 1 in English. Like a ritornello, the word 'Blessed' recurs several times, characteristically harmonized with fourth chords. The choral movement is quite varied and unfolds to up to eight parts. Solos emerge periodically from all voice groups. Homophonic sections contrast with thematically fragmented and imitative sections, accompanied sections with a cappella sections. The work begins with the tone 'E' which is tapped five times and wanders through all instruments of the quintet. Then various melodies and virtuoso figurations form in the beginning which, very quickly, lead to a quiet five-note legato motif. It appears for the first time in the cello part, becomes more and more present in all melodic instruments and then dominates the second movement in many variants. Its calm flow is interrupted once in a 'furioso' way by fast falling figures which are reminiscent of the gestures in the first movement.Instrumentation:clarinet, violin, viola, cello and piano; Die beiden Teile des luftigen, im typisch aphoristisch-präzisen Spätstil Mamloks gehaltenen Werkes dauern zusammen gerade einmal fünf Minuten, aber in dieser Zeit passiert einiges. Many of them were performed for the first time in the final years of the composer who died in 2016. Mamlok himself played the accompaniment when (not only) her early piano works were released on CD by the label Bridge Records. They are now available in the present sheet music edition which contains three pieces from the days of her studies with George Szell, Roger Sessions and at the famous Black Mountain College (1942 and 1944) as well as three works with greater pianistic demands created after 1946. The collection also shows the composer's path from traditional forms towards her characteristic style and atonality.Instrumentation:piano; Ursula Mamloks vor dem Bläserquintett (1956) entstandenen Werke waren bislang fast ausnahmslos ungedruckt.
