A History with Documents. Author Charles Eddis. tells in detail how the American Unitarians struggled to reconcile hopes and good intentions with painful political realities emerging after World War II. Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book narrates the author's youthful spiritual crisis and intellectual journey through Unitarianism, skepticism, and religious doubt. Driven by a desire for distinction and a misunderstanding of divine intervention, the author briefly adhered to Christian teachings. However, plagued by skepticism, they sought solace in Unitarianism and the writings of Franklin, becoming a teacher and supporter of religious causes. Despite outward religious observance, the author struggled with inner turmoil and ultimately embraced a form of universalism, rejecting the doctrines of endless punishment and total depravity. The author's candid account sheds light on the complexities of religious experience, the dangers of intellectual arrogance, and the persistent search for spiritual meaning. Through the author's journey, the book offers insights into the nature of faith, the role of doubt, and the enduring human need for connection with the divine. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. First printing. Octavo (20cm). Publisher's brown embossed cloth, titled in gilt on spine; pale yellow endpapers; viii,[9]-404; frontispiece portrait; [4]pp ads following text. A straight and attractive copy, with just mild spotting to cloth and a touch of wear at spine ends; internally sound and unmarked, with some faint and scattered foxing, heaviest on endpapers and prelims; a solidly VG copy. Contemporary ownership signature in pencil of Jeremy Bissell Esq. of Windsor, Connecticut. Biography, written by his youngest son, of the most important early expositor of Universalism in America. Ballou (1771-1852) is little-remembered outside of Universalist circles, perhaps because, unlike his cousin, contemporary, and fellow Universalist minister Adin Ballou, he rarely addressed political and social matters in his own writings or at the pulpit. Thus it is not surprising that this biography, written by his son, the prominent Boston journalist Maturin Ballou (a founding editor of the Boston Globe), does not address anything beyond Ballou's pastoral and doctrinal accomplishments. …

A superior copy. Bulfinch's third published book and first collection of poetry, written while he was serving as Assistant Pastor of the Second Independent (i.e. Universalist) Church of Charleston, South Carolina. The volume is dedicated to Bulfinch's superior, Rev. Samuel Gilman and is comprised in roughly equal measure of "Devotional" poems, on religious and patriotic themes; and "Miscellaneous" poems, including sonnets and occasional works. Bulfinch was the brother of Thomas, author of "Bulfinch's Mythology," and is mostly remembered today (if at all) as a hymnodist, composer of such once-popular works as 'Hath not thy heart within thee burned?" and "O, suffering friend of human kind.".…
