Reverberations of the Theory of Evolution in Ethnology, Literature and History, language: Engli…sh, abstract: Classic evolutionary theory always looks backwards. Darwin, his predecessors and successors put forward their theories by comparing present organic records with those of the past. Indeed some ideas of social evolution are imbued with a certain kind of perspective into the future, believing in an ongoing progression of human societies. Still, in order to prove the accuracy of those ideas, one had to rely on evidence taken from history or from cultures which were believed to be primitive and thus representing former states of societies. Science fiction's view goes quite in the opposite direction: Here, the present marks the point of view from where we look into the future of society, the future of mankind. The following paper examines the notions of evolution we can find in William Gibson's work. I will try to deal with the question how we can perceive an evolution of the human race in his novels and what other ideas of evolution Gibson incorporates into his work. Starting off with the query whether there is to find any sort of biological evolution in Gibson's work, the second chapter will deal with the picture of nature Gibson draws. How does he describe nature (meaning organic beings or biological environments), or to put it more correctly, how is nature conceived through the eyes of his protagonists Then I will take a closer look at the dualistic relationship of nature and technology. What importance has technology for the societies Gibson sketches, and what effect has technology on their inventors The main topic of this chapter will be the investigation of nature's and technology's evolutionary features in Gibson's work: How does the human species develop and which way does human made technology take Finally, the chapter will deal with capitalism as a very own kind of evolutionary concept.Chapter three will take a look at the concept of evolution in Gibson's work from a different angle, treating evolution not as concrete biological-technological development but more as some sort of abstract principle. The focus will shift here from the dualism of biology-technology to the dialectics of chaos and order. Does Gibson see evolution more as a force driven by chaos or as a force that creates structure, patterns and order from mere chaos.

I chose the term 'machine' as a generic term for any theory applying technological, mechanical or machinic ideas, most of which using the machine as a metaphor for sociological, philosophical or psychoanalytic approaches.At the same time, I want to illustrate on the basis of Kubrick's work how the theoretical discourse on this topic has changed in the course of time. Being initially cut down to a very literal understanding of machines as actual physical devices, the 20th century discourse about technology has shown that the demarcation line between what is nature and what is technology is not as easily drawn as it might appear. Man is inseparably bound up with his tools and culture as a whole could be regarded as some kind of machinery. Thus, a great part of both this paper and Kubrick's work deals with the notion of a cultural machine.Another part, however, will leave the narrow view of the machine as a strictly cultural metaphor. Recent philosophical currents like the work of Deleuze, Maturana and the academic gender discourse try to evolve a new coining of the term 'machinic' that goes beyond rigid dualistic notions. I will try to show that these ideas can be found in Kubrick's films as well.

Das Wort leitet sich her von den griechischen Wörtern para = neben und nous = Verstand, bedeutet also so etwas wie 'neben dem Verstand seiend'. Im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch ist der Begriff jedoch längst synonym mit einer speziellen Form des Wahns, dem Verfolgungswahn. Diese Konnotation scheint zunächst eindeutig amerikanisch geprägt. Zwar waren es im 19. Jahrhundert deutsche Psychiater wie Karl Ludwig Kahlbaum und Emil Kraeplin und zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts dann prominente Figuren wie Sigmund Freud und Heinrich Schulte, die sich mit dem medizinischen Phänomen beschäftigten, doch hat sich der Begriff der Paranoia mittlerweile längst aus seinem medizinischen Kontext gelöst und wird soziologisch, politisch und kulturell verwendet und dies besonders im amerikanischen Raum. Im Folgenden soll jedoch gezeigt werden, dass Paranoia kein regionales Phänomen ist, sondern als kulturelle Erscheinung eine weit verbreitete Blüte der Moderne ist, die schließlich in der Postmoderne ihre volle Reife erlangt. So speist sich die Paranoia aus dem ewigen Spannungsfeld des modernen Freiheitsbegriffes, der mit einem immer rigider scheinenden Ordnungsdrang/Ordnungszwang im Widerspruch steht. Damit ist der Begriff der Paranoia eng verbunden mit dem Begriff der Aufklärung, bzw. der von Horkheimer und Adorno postulierten Dialektik der Aufklärung . Meine Untersuchung soll anhand einiger weniger prägnanter Filmbeispiele dargelegt werden. Es handelt sich dabei weniger um die klassischen Verschwörungsfilme, also Politthriller und Spionagefilme wie etwa 'The Manchurian Candidate' (1962 und 2004), 'Three Days Of The Condor' oder 'JFK', sondern vielmehr um Filme, die sich auf das Innenleben ihrer Protagonisten und ihr Verhältnis zu ihrer Umwelt konzentrieren. Zunächst soll ein wesentliches Element der Paranoia herausgearbeitet werden, nämlich ihre Eigenschaft, den Einzelnen von der Masse zu separieren. Davon ausgehend soll untersucht werden, inwieweit Paranoia als kulturelle Ausprägung des dialektischen Spannungsverhältnisses zwischen diesen beiden Kräften gesehen werden kann. Schließlich soll die Paranoia als eine Reaktion auf die vom Menschen geschaffene, unüberschaubare Welt der Postmoderne dargestellt werden, in der alles mit allem irgendwie in Verbindung zu stehen scheint.

Untersucht werden sowohl die Romanfragmente Kafkas als auch einige seiner bekannteren Erzählungen. Der Begriff des Systems wird in den Geisteswissenschaften, vor allem in der Soziologie, stets in Verbindung mit Niklas Luhmanns System-theorie gebracht. Luhmanns Theorie stützte sich ursprünglich auf systemtheoretische Untersuchungen im Bereich der Naturwissenschaften und wandte sie auf soziale Systeme an. Dank ähnlicher Übertragung auf andere Bereiche (z.B. der Wirtschaftswissenschaften) versteht man heute unter Systemtheorie die interdisziplinäre Erforschung der struk-turellen und funktionalen Eigenschaften sowohl natürlicher, sozialer als auch technischer Systeme. Der im Folgenden benutzte Begriff des Systems soll sich weniger auf diese Systemtheorie beziehen, sondern meint in einem viel grundlegenderen Sinne lediglich eine Ordnung, nach der etwas organisiert wird. Freilich wird die Untersuchung von Systemen und Systemstörungen in Kafkas Werk mitunter Bereiche streifen, die auch Untersuchungsgegenstand der Systemtheorie sind, so etwa das Phänomen der Selbstorganisation von Systemen. Jedoch soll hier nicht der Versuch unternommen werden, diese Phänomene strukturell zu analysieren. Eine Erforschung von Kafkas Arbeiten vor dem Hintergrund der Systemtheorie wäre sicher interessant, soll aber nicht Thema dieser Hausarbeit sein. So steht System hier als Synonym für Ordnung im Gegensatz zum Begriff der Unordnung.

I chose the term 'machine' as a generic term for any theory applying technological, mechanical or machinic ideas, most of which using the machine as a metaphor for sociological, philosophical or psychoanalytic approaches.At the same time, I want to illustrate on the basis of Kubrick's work how the theoretical discourse on this topic has changed in the course of time. Being initially cut down to a very literal understanding of machines as actual physical devices, the 20th century discourse about technology has shown that the demarcation line between what is nature and what is technology is not as easily drawn as it might appear. Man is inseparably bound up with his tools and culture as a whole could be regarded as some kind of machinery. Thus, a great part of both this paper and Kubrick's work deals with the notion of a cultural machine.Another part, however, will leave the narrow view of the machine as a strictly cultural metaphor. Recent philosophical currents like the work of Deleuze, Maturana and the academic gender discourse try to evolve a new coining of the term 'machinic' that goes beyond rigid dualistic notions. I will try to show that these ideas can be found in Kubrick's films as well. 76 pp. Englisch.
