Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Amply illustrated text considers many theories of the origin of Druidism, its early mention by Greek and Roman writers (ca. 52 B.C.), and the temples and religious practices of this ancient civilization. Still regarded with affection in the popular imagination, the Druids, at the height of their power in Celtic Britain, were known for their love of nature and worshipping heros and ancestors. Signs of their renown are still clearly marked: in guidebooks, place-names of the countryside, and most visibly, in such structures as Stonehenge. T. D. Kendrick - widely cited in many studies of druids and druidism - presents a well-documented summary of druidic culture, offering a detailed account of the racial history, prehistory, and social atmosphere of early Gallic and British civilization. Amply illustrated with rare maps, jewelry, pottery, wall carvings, stone inscriptions, timeworn foundations and burial grounds, the text considers the many theories of the origin of Druidism, its early mention by Greek and Roman writers (ca. 52 B.C.), and the temples and religious practices of these ancient people. A thorough study of a fascinating topic, this book will appeal to anthropologists, folklore enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the early religious and cultural life of Celtic Britain. Amply illustrated text considers many theories of the origin of Druidism, its early mention by Greek and Roman writers (ca. 52 B.C.), and the temples and religious practices of this ancient civilization. This enthralling, well-documented, and vivid account chronicles the activities of those bold sea raiders of the North who terrorized Europe from the eighth to the eleventh centuries. A dramatic narrative takes readers from the White Sea in the Arctic to Africa's Moroccan coast, from Viking operations in Russia, England, and Ireland, to daring exploits in Iceland, Greenland, and America.Written by a former curator of the British Museum's Department of Medieval Antiquities, the volume is one of the first complete accounts of the Nordic raiders. Amply illustrated and written with freshness and vigor, this perennially appealing story of conquest will be valuable to scholars and students of Nordic history."A titanic subject and in [the author's] hands, it becomes absorbing drama." -- Bookman."Undoubtedly the best and most comprehensive study . it would be hard to name a work in any tongue which could rival its treatment of the subject." -- Times [London] Literary Supplement.…

He considers she was 'very wise to take the opportunity'. He has discussed 'the house-key question with the Keeper [T. D. Kendrick]', who regards Saturday afternoons 'as a sacred time reserved for peaceful work, undisturbed by ones colleagues'. Consequently 'it would be rather difficult to accommodate you as a helper on Saturdays and after your week's work at the ministry'. Inscribed: 'To Eric Sexton/with good wishes/from/T. D. Kendrick/9/9/49'. Eric H. L. Sexton (1902-1980) 'was a great American bibliophile who assembled a celebrated library, most noted for its collection of incunabula. In this regard, Sexton obtained examples from presses in 114 different towns, including the first or only examples printed in Augsburg, Dijon, Foligno, Genoa, Cividale, Lauingen, Marienthal, Rougemont, Scandiano, Vercelli, and even Constantinople. Sexton had a great eye for rarity, such that he had seventy-eight titles in which Goff records only three copies, six were unrecorded by Goff, and three of his books were the only known examples. Most of his library was sold at Christie's in April 1981 (Donald A. Heald).
