A la mort de Charlemagne, puis de son fils Louis le pieux, l'empire, conformément à la tradition carolingienne, fut partagé entre les trois petits-fils de Charlemagne lors du traité de Verdun en 843 : la Lotharingie, domaine de Lothaire, allant de la Germanie jusqu'à l'Italie en passant par la Meuse, le Rhin et le Rhône, la Fran…cie Orientale et la Francie Occidentale. Le catalogue met en avant l'histoire de ce royaume souvent méconnu ainsi que l'exceptionnelle richesse de l'art carolingien.La Lotharingie, au fil d'évolutions politiques complexes, se trouve en effet avoir couvert des territoires, allant de la mer du Nord à la mer Méditerranée et aujourd'hui intégrés à l'Allemagne, les Pays-Bas, la Belgique, le Luxembourg, la France et l'Italie. Cette géographie mouvante mais cependant ancrée dans le continent européen occidental, est au fondement de la splendeur artistique de la Lotharingie.Héritières directes des inventions des artistes du Palais de Charlemagne, les oeuvres créées à la seconde moitié du IXe et au Xe siècles, reflètent dans le domaine de la création les multiples facettes du territoire, allant du monde germanique à l'Italie, en passant par les vallées de la Meuse, du Rhin et du Rhône.
