Añadir al carrito8vo: 4 pp. Bifolium. 66 lines. Text clear and complete, on aged, spotted and worn paper. Letterhead with printed mottos in decorative borders: 'Total Abstinence is the only certain Preventive of, or Remedy for Intemperance.' and 'INDIVIDUAL ABSTINENCE. | STATE PROHIBITION.' In conclusion Gell apologises for 'what you no doubt will stigmatize as an absurd letter', and to the modern reader this item is certainly unintentionally-amusing. Since his correspondent 'went up', 'one of my Tasmanian friends along with Mrs. Mercer's (of the Bethel) daughter returned from Tasmania via Melbourne & we have enjoyed several outings; as you may suppose'. He has also taken 'Miss Lenton & Miss Mercer to Gasson's where we had tea & enjoyed ourselves muchly'. 'I expect you will give me another bantering about it, but I don't mind, as it is only a Platonic attachment. I fancy I can see your incredulous smile; but I can assure you it is nothing more; for apart from the physiological aspect & the disparity in years there is an insuperable objection in the matter of means & position which will effectually prevent any closer intimacy.' Gell finds it 'very hard at times to carry out the Platonic idea', having to be on his guard 'lest it degenerates into the more gross & sensual one'. As 'Walter' will no doubt 'be inclined to say "What is the old fool driving at"?' Gell explains that he is 'a believer in animal magnetism, hence the physiological objection before mentioned; for Miss L. & I have similar complexion & temperaments, & I am inclined to think any closer intimacy would be productive of unhappiness & unpleasantness on account of the theory that, like temperaments repel & unlike attract. [.] how else can we account for the fact of apparently healthy parents having children who are doomed to a premature grave; except on the grounds of temperamental inadaptation.' Founded in America in 1850, IOGT International is still active.

Añadir al carritoLeather. Condición: Good. [Temperance Movement]. Journal of quarter leather over marbled paper boards, (12.25 x 7.75 inches). Containing manuscript (handwritten in script) records of the Dover Temperance Society which was an Auxilliary to the Cuyhoga County Temperance Society. Records begin March 9th, 1833 and contain the organizations Constitution, Bylaws, Membership list, and Meeting Minutes. The records comprise 40 pages of the blank journal. The Cuyahoga County Temperance Society, organized on 31 March 1830, was the first recorded temperance group in Cleveland. It was a branch of the American Temperance Society, the first national temperance group, organized in 1826. We find no record of the Dover Temperance Society in "The History of Cuyahoga County, Ohio" or other references. There is mention of the formation of Temperance Union League in Dover in 1873, but no mention of the Dover Temperance Society formed in 1833, forty years earlier. Making this manuscript journal an unique and historcally important record of the societies activities. While the exterior of the journal book shows significant wear and loss to spine, with tender joints, the interior is well preserved and the script neat and readable.

Añadir al carritoOn a leaf roughly 17 x 12 cms. A small strip is missing from the foot, but this does not appear to affect the texts. Aged and ruckled, with a little staining from previous mount at head and foot of printed side. In the Letter Moseley opines that 'the closing of Public Houses during the whole of Sundays would be attended with great inconvenience to the public, and I cannot therefore agree to the object of Promoters of that scheme'. Docketed in the top left-hand corner 'Mark name on list as unfavourable'. The handbill, signed in type by John Garrett, D.D. and Robert Whitworth, is intended to accompany 'a very important Report, to which we earnestly beg your kind and favourable attention.' The 'Executive of the Central Association' are 'most anxious to obtain the approval of all the Magistrates in the United Kingdom [.] in what touches so vitally the prosperity of the nation.' After the separation of his parents Sir Oswald Moseley, 6th Baronet and founder of the British Union of Fascists, was brought up by the author of this letter.

Añadir al carritoSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. The recipient is not to be confused with his father the botanist Dawson Turner (1775-1858), whose entry contains the following regarding the son: 'During his final decade he lived in central London, and his untidy figure became familiar to the needy in hospitals and on the streets, whom he assisted with dedicated benevolence. He died in Charing Cross Hospital, London, on 29 January 1885, and was buried at Brompton cemetery.' The present item was hence written within weeks of the recpient's death. Post Card printed with red halfpenny stamp. With St John's Wood postmark and one other, addressed to 'Revd Dr Dawson Turner / Charing Cross Hospital / Charing Cross / WC'. In fair condition, lightly grubby and worn.
