Soft cover. Condición: Near Fine. First Edition First Printing. Initiated with the passage of the 1919 Volstead Act & enforced by the 18th Amendment in 1920, prohibition became the law of the land in the United States for over a decade. However, public support of & compliance with the act were severely waning by the end of the 1…920s. These booklets were two in a series of monographs issued by the Bureau of Prohibition within the U.S. Treasury Dept in 1930 an attempt to rally the citizenry & convince all those who "have at heart the interest of home, family, & community" the practical value of supporting the government in its efforts to ban the manufacture, transport, use, & sale of alcoholic beverages. "Public Cooperation" focuses on the role of property owners & the railroad industry, along with that of civil leaders, insurance companies, business owners, & others. State Cooperation in the Enforcement of National Prohibition Laws." 70 pages, 2-staple binding. Light khaki green wrappers lettered & ruled in black to front. Compares state & national prohibition efforts, with lengthy sections on New England, Pennsylvania, & New York (state & city), with a review of relevant legislation & court cases. 16 pp. Sheet music printed throughout. 8-3/16" x 5-5/16" "The liquor issue, because of its moral, social, economic and industrial bearing on the public welfare, concerns the interest of practically every citizen. By adding to this issue declarations on other important issues which the old parties have neglected, the Prohibitioni…sts have evolved a strong national platform of action which appeals to many patriotic voters. Cynics may say 'you cannot win,' but the Gallup survey shows that there are 18,000,000 believeres [sic] in Prohibition in the United States. This means we have the numbers. What tremendous political power that represents. It should be harnessed to a political party and put to work to save our Democracy." 2 institutional holdings located on OCLC (Drew University & the Clarke Historical Library). Rare in the trade. 8vo: 4 pp. Bifolium. 66 lines. Text clear and complete, on aged, spotted and worn paper. Letterhead with printed mottos in decorative borders: 'Total Abstinence is the only certain Preventive of, or Remedy for Intemperance.' and 'INDIVIDUAL ABSTINENCE. | STATE PROHIBITION.' In conclusion Gell apologises for 'what you no doubt wi…ll stigmatize as an absurd letter', and to the modern reader this item is certainly unintentionally-amusing. Since his correspondent 'went up', 'one of my Tasmanian friends along with Mrs. Mercer's (of the Bethel) daughter returned from Tasmania via Melbourne & we have enjoyed several outings; as you may suppose'. He has also taken 'Miss Lenton & Miss Mercer to Gasson's where we had tea & enjoyed ourselves muchly'. 'I expect you will give me another bantering about it, but I don't mind, as it is only a Platonic attachment. I fancy I can see your incredulous smile; but I can assure you it is nothing more; for apart from the physiological aspect & the disparity in years there is an insuperable objection in the matter of means & position which will effectually prevent any closer intimacy.' Gell finds it 'very hard at times to carry out the Platonic idea', having to be on his guard 'lest it degenerates into the more gross & sensual one'. As 'Walter' will no doubt 'be inclined to say "What is the old fool driving at"?' Gell explains that he is 'a believer in animal magnetism, hence the physiological objection before mentioned; for Miss L. & I have similar complexion & temperaments, & I am inclined to think any closer intimacy would be productive of unhappiness & unpleasantness on account of the theory that, like temperaments repel & unlike attract. [.] how else can we account for the fact of apparently healthy parents having children who are doomed to a premature grave; except on the grounds of temperamental inadaptation.' Founded in America in 1850, IOGT International is still active.
