Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. A rare 1620 edition of Melis Stoke's "Rijmkroniek", with large title vignette.Full vellum binding in good condition. Folio edition, in -2. Collation: ?24A-O4. 31 x 21 cm. Interior in good condition. Interesting manuscript annotations. Also a name, but not yet deciphered. From 1290 on Melis Stoke composed a chronicle in verse on the county of Holland. Written in Middle Dutch, this "Rijmkroniek" was one of the first books to appear in the Dutch language. It describes (among other stories) the assassination of Floris V, Count of Holland and Zeeland. Stoke's chronicle was based on written sources, testimonies and his own observations. Unfortunately, Melis Stoke is not praised for his historical accuracy and reliability. The first published edition of the "Rijmkroniek" appeared in Amsterdam in 1591 (ed. J. van der Does). Due to his ability to read and write (most people of his time were illiterate) Stoke is believed to have been a monk. The Melis Stokelaan in The Hague was named after him.Rare Rijmkroniek Counts of Holland Melis Stoke.

Brunet 548 Graesse VI, 502. Third but first illustrated edition of Stoke's mediaeval rhyming chronicle (885-1305), edited, with additions, by Cornelis Van Alkemade. The work is known for its exactitude and minute detail and it has proved of inestimable service to later historians. The fine series of full-length portraits of the reigning princes of Holland were engraved after paintings in the Carmelite Monastery at Haarlem. According to the editor, the portraits of Philip of Austria, Emperor Charles V, and Philip II of Spain were omitted as they were not present in the Haarlem series on which the plates were based but were only added to complete the list of rulers.; the portrait of Jan III was never executed for unknown reasons.

French issue of the atlas volume of HOLLANDSCHE JAAR-BOEKEN OF RIJM-KRONIJK, the third edition (Leyden, 1699), and first illustrated, of Melis Stoke's (ca. 1235-1305) medieval chronicle. With 35 engravings after paintings in the Carmelite Monastery at Haarlem of medieval Dutch royalty, with the final plate a smiling Death. The Leyden 1699 edition is relatively common, while this issue with French title page and no imprint, is scarce. We locate only one institutional copy worldwide, at the New York Public, which, like the present copy, omits Stoke's text and contains only the 35 plates. The French title suggests that the plates were issued alone. Brunet V 547 , Lipperheide 939, Graesse VI, 502 (all for Leyden, 1699 edition); for this edition: Guigard IV, 3067 (citing the copy in "Catalogue des livres rare et curieux de Francisque Michel") Uncut, in contemporary marbled wrappers, binding split and perished, two leaves with minor marginal repair, plates clean 35 engraved plates (one double page), some titled in contemporary hand.
