Peter Stevens (1919-1979) was a German-Jewish teenage refugee who escaped Nazi Persecution in 1933. Still a German citizen, he committed identity theft to join the RAF in 1939, where he completed 22 missions against his own country before being shot down and taken prisoner by the Nazis in September, 1941. His desire to escape did not falter despite being recaptured several times, and he remained an active participant in logistics and planning for several major breakouts, including the Great Escape. After liberation, he was awarded the Military Cross and served as a British spy at the beginning of the Cold War before emigrating to Canada to resume a civilian life. This book tells the remarkable story of a deeply conflicted young man afforded an opportunity to help his persecuted people obtain a small measure of revenge, a tale that is at once sad yet uplifting.
