Trade Paperback. Condición: Good. First Edition Stated. 96 Pages with Photo Index as well as a General Index. Glossy pictorial wrap-around covers with black and white photography. No defects noted and interior text and photographic pages are near flawless. Illustrated with 81 THEN black and white photographs on the left side, and 81 NOW photos on the right side. Through its long history, spanning over 400 years, Santa Fe, New Mexico has faced many challenges: strife between civil and religious officials of the 17th century, the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, a stream of French and Anglo-American merchants via the Santa Fe Trail, and the transfer of sovereignty from Mexico to the United States after the 1846 invasion of U.S. troops. All of these historical developments have left their imprint on the physical appearance of this most fascinating of cities. And there have been inevitable changes in the face of the land and the city. This book takes a look at the 'then' of Santa Fe and guides us into the 'now' of today. Swenson, John - Photographs (ilustrador).…

Klammergeheftet. Condición: Gut. 20 p., Ill. Mit einer eingelegten, unbeschriebenen Postkarte. Der Einband ist berieben, ansonsten ein gutes Exemplar ohne Anstreichungen. / With an inserted, blank postcard. The binding is rubbed, otherwise a good copy without markings. -- (Excerpt:) FOREWORD Through the ages, Jewish history has been preserved not only on the written page, but also on the carved stones of Jewish cemeteries. Over the centuries, the first act that Jews performed after moving into a new area was to establish and dedi cate a cemetery. To honor and care for the dead was considered the greatest of all Mitzvot-positive acts following God's commandments. In 1881, pioneering Jews of Las Vegas, New Mexico, founded a small cemetery at the far outskirts of the town. Today, over a century later, the Montefiore Cemetery is incorporated into the town along with cemeteries of organizations such as the Masons. The names and histories of the men, women and children of Las Vegas Jewry are found on the stones in this graveyard. Unfortunately, vandalism has destroyed much of that great historic site. Jews today are attempting to preserve the cemetery and to prevent further vandalism. This booklet is about the Montefiore Cemetery, established by New Mexico's first Jewish congregation, and the efforts of past and present generations of Jews and non-Jews to maintain our precious connection with Jewish history. Thank you for reading this work and seeing the pictures of a proud chapter in New Mexico Jewish history. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 250.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - In 1981, while working as New Mexico State Historian, Stanley M. Hordes began to hear stories of Hispanos who lit candles on Friday night and abstained from eating pork. Puzzling over the matter, Hordes realized that these practices might very well have been passed down through the centuries from early crypto-Jewish settlers in New Spain. After extensive research and hundreds of interviews, Hordes concluded that there was, in New Mexico and the Southwest, a Sephardic legacy derived from the converso community of Spanish Jews.…

Hardback. Condición: New. In 1981, while working as New Mexico State Historian, Stanley M. Hordes began to hear stories of Hispanos who lit candles on Friday night and abstained from eating pork. Puzzling over the matter, Hordes realized that these practices might very well have been passed down through the centuries from early crypto-Jewish settlers in New Spain. After extensive research and hundreds of interviews, Hordes concluded that there was, in New Mexico and the Southwest, a Sephardic legacy derived from the converso community of Spanish Jews. In To the End of the Earth, Hordes explores the remarkable story of crypto-Jews and the tenuous preservation of Jewish rituals and traditions in Mexico and New Mexico over the past five hundred years. He follows the crypto-Jews from their Jewish origins in medieval Spain and Portugal to their efforts to escape persecution by migrating to the New World and settling in the far reaches of the northern Mexican frontier.Drawing on individual biographies (including those of colonial officials accused of secretly practicing Judaism), family histories, Inquisition records, letters, and other primary sources, Hordes provides a richly detailed account of the economic, social and religious lives of crypto-Jews during the colonial period and after the annexation of New Mexico by the United States in 1846. While the American government offered more religious freedom than had the Spanish colonial rulers, cultural assimilation into Anglo-American society weakened many elements of the crypto-Jewish tradition. Hordes concludes with a discussion of the reemergence of crypto-Jewish culture and the reclamation of Jewish ancestry within the Hispano community in the late twentieth century. He examines the publicity surrounding the rediscovery of the crypto-Jewish community and explores the challenges inherent in a study that attempts to reconstruct the history of a people who tried to leave no documentary record.…
