Besides dialectological and sociolinguistic concepts also a lay perspective of linguistic space is considered, a paradigm that is often referred to as "folk dialectology". Many of the studies in this volume make use of new computational possibilities of processing and cartographically representing large corpora of linguistic data. The empirical studies incorporate findings from different linguistic communities in Europe and pursue the objective to shed light on the inter-relationship between the different concepts of space and their relevance to variational linguistics.

Die Analysen der "Mental Maps" von über 200 Informanten erlauben einerseits einen differenzierten Einblick in die Strategien der subjektiven Dialektraumkonstruktion, die sich dabei häufig als überindividuell erweisen und sich meist an räumlich-strukturellen (u.a. landschaftlich-topographischen, territorialen, konfessionellen oder politischen) Faktoren orientieren. Andererseits lässt sich der in der objektiven Dialektologie oftmals prognostizierte Abbau kleinräumiger Dialektstrukturen auch an den Vorstellungen der Sprecher selbst ablesen. Methodisch schlägt die Arbeit Brücken zur Humangeographie und zur Geographischen Informationswissenschaft und entwickelt dabei Analyseverfahren, die bisher in der Sprachraumforschung nicht verfügbar waren.
