Trade Paperback. Condición: Fine. First Printing. 188 Pages. In Barcelona, an aging Brazilian prostitute trains her dog to weep at the grave she has chosen for herself. In Vienna, a woman parlays her gift for seeing the future into a fortunetelling position with a wealthy family. In Geneva, an ambulance driver and his wife take in the lonely, apparently dying ex-President of a Caribbean country, only to discover that his political ambition is very much intact. In these twelve masterly stories about the lives of Latin Americans in Europe, Garcia Márquez conveys the peculiar amalgam of melancholy, tenacity, sorrow, and aspiration that is the emigre experience. The twelve stories in this shimmering new collection from the author of One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera feature Latin American characters adrift in Europe. A bereaved father comes to Rome for an audience with the Pope, carrying a box the shape and size of a cello case. An aging streetwalker waits for death in a Barcelona apartment with a dog she has trained to weep at her grave. A panic-stricken husband takes his wife to a Parisian hospital for the treatment of a cut finger and never sees her again. Combining terror and nostalgia, surreal comedy and the poetry of the commonplace, Strange Pilgrims is a triumph of narrative sorcery by one of our foremost magicians of the written word. Contents: Prologue Why Twelve, Why Stories, Why Pilgrims, Bon Voyage, Mr. President, The Saint, Sleeping Beauty and the Airplane, I Sell My Dreams, I Only Came to Use the Phone, The Ghosts of August, Maria dos Prazeres, Seventeen Poisoned Englishmen, Tramontana, Miss Forbes's Summer of Happiness, Light Is Like Water, and The Trail of Your Blood in the Snow.

Trade Paperback. Condición: Very Good. First Edition Third Porinting. 89 Pages. Previous owner's name on title page. The revitalization of pottery-making among the Indians of the Southwest has increased demand for more information about potters and their art. Museums display Casas Grandes pottery, collectors cherish it, scholars study it, yet books available about this subject are few and in many cases outdated. The purpose of this book is to provide the general public with an up-to-date (1991) account of the pottery tradition of the Casas Grandes Valley. So much has happened in the last few years, we felt a book would be of immense value to scholars, collectors, dealers, students and anyone intrigued by the pottery of the Southwest and its exciting metamorphosis during the past century. To present the reader with an uninterrupted and unencumbered report on the status of modern pottery in the Casas Grandes Valley and stay away from the scholarly approach. Since pottery is a visual art this is a visual journey to the Casas Grandes Valley, where you can walk down the dusty streets of the old village and enter the homes of these humble, yet highly creative people. Here you can see for yourself what's happening. Illustrated with maps and more than 100 photos. Contents: Introduction, Pueblo Pottery, Nampeyo, Ancient Design, The History, Pacquime Ruins, An Ancient Craft Rediscovered, The Village, Juan Quezada, The Quezada Family, The Clay, The Potting Process, The Painting Process, The Firing Process, The Olivas Family, Felix Ortiz, The Women, The Children, Contemporary Design, Collecting Guidelines, Beyond Ceramics, and Quezada Genealogy. Laid in is a copy of Kiva, Vol 60 N0. 1, pages 71 thru 94. Includes articles titled Pioneering an Art Moement in Northern Mexico The Potters of Mata Ortiz, Inventing a Technology Juan's Discoveries, Juan's Painting Style, Innovations by Other Potters, Juan and Porvenir, Conservatism in Tools, Mata Ortiz in the Casas Granes Tradition Aversion to Copying, Meetings with Potters, and Conclusion.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First English Language edition. 415 pp, The World of Pio Baroja by Anthony Kerrigan; Novel: The Restlessness of Shanti Andia; Stories: The Cabbages in the Cemetery; The Abyss; Essays and Sketches: The way I Write; The Renegade Friar; Galvez the Absurd; The Tale of a Wig; Play: The Legend of Juan de Alzate. 5.8" x 9.2" cloth boards. Price clipped. Minor edge wear to dj with only the slightest age-toning to bottom and fore- text block edge, else, no wear. Tight and strong binding with slight forward lean, else no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Dark Blue decorative cloth with yellow lettering to spine. "Pio Baroja y Nessi (1872-1956) was a Spanish writer, one of the key novelists of the Generation of '98. He was a member of an illustrious family, his brother Ricardo was a painter, writer and engraver, and his nephew Julio Caro Baroja, son of his younger sister Carmen, was a well-known anthropologist. In keeping with Spanish literary tradition, Baroja often wrote in a pessimistic, picaresque style. His deft portrayal of the characters and settings brought the Basque region to life much as Benito Perez Galdós's works offered an insight into Madrid. Baroja's works were often lively but could be lacking in plot. They are written in an abrupt, vivid, yet impersonal style. He was accused of grammatical errors, which he never denied. Ernest Hemingway was greatly influenced by Baroja and told him when he visited him in October 1956, 'Allow me to pay this small tribute to you who taught so much to those of us who wanted to be writers when we were young. I deplore the fact that you have not yet received a Nobel Prize, especially when it was given to so many who deserved it less, like me, who am only an adventurer'. Baroja died shortly after this visit and was buried in the Civil Cemetery of Madrid." Size: Octavo. Book.
