Interior pages are clean. Bindings are firm. Still an attractive set. VOLUME I: [2], i-xii, 13-382 pages. VOLUME II: [2], v-viii, 9-581, [1], [6] pages. Bibliographic reference: Wright Howes U.S. IANA P-571 (but citing the earlier editions of 1855, 1856, and 1858). Although born and educated in Maine, Seargent Smith Prentiss (1808-1850) rose to prominence in Mississippi as a lawyer practicing in Natchez and Vicksburg. He was elected to the Mississippi State House of Representatives for the 1836-1837 term and served in the US Congress from May 30, 1838, to March 3, 1839 after contesting the election of John F.H. Claiborne. A supporter of the Whig Party, Prentiss is best remembered for his eloquent oratory and, in particular, his speeches upon the House floor where, according to legend, Senator Daniel Webster would switch chambers on such occasions so as to hear his colleague speak. Bibliographic reference: Wright Howes U.S. IANA P-571 (but citing the earlier editions of 1855, 1856, and 1858). Although born and educated in Maine, Seargent Smith Prentiss (1808-1850) rose to prominence in Mississippi as a lawyer practicing in Natchez and Vicksburg. He was elected to the Mississippi State House of Representatives for the 1836-1837 term and served in the US Congress from May 30, 1838, to March 3, 1839 after contesting the election of John F.H. Claiborne. A supporter of the Whig Party, Prentiss is best remembered for his eloquent oratory and, in particular, his speeches upon the House floor where, according to legend, Senator Daniel Webster would switch chambers on such occasions so as to hear his colleague speak. Octavo, stapled illustrated wraps, 42 pp. Very Good plus to about near fine; two chips at bottom front cover, peripheral toning (see scans). s This November / 1955 issue was published as Ron Smith was continuing to improve the fanzine, which had been erratic in quality in prior years; 1956, yet to come, would be perhaps the best year. Though credited artwork is still sparse, there's plenty inside to enjoy; a rare short story - "Infiltration" by Carl Larsen - and articles, editorials, essays and reviews by editor Smith, William L. Freeman, Randall Garrett, Robert Silverberg, Lin Carter, Dave Mason, James Blish, George W. Price, Carl Larsen, Joe Schaumburger, R.S. Montague, S. It is likely that William Fulkerson was a younger brother to Horace S. Fulkerson (1818-1891) who too resided in Port Gibson from 1840 to 1858 where he served as Deputy United States Marshall but thereafter moved to New Orleans eventually employed in several Confederate capacities including a stint as special agent in Europe procuring arms and munitions.
