Der katholische St. Benno-Verlag hat diese freundliche Wurdigung zum 26. Jahrestag seines Amtsantritts am 22. Oktober 1978 herausgebracht und bietet einen Uberblick uber die Vita dieses ungewohnlichen Kirchenfuhrers. In der Fruhzeit seiner Karriere wurde Karol Wojtyla von der kommunistischen Regierung Polens 1963 zum Nachfolger des Krakauer Erzbischofs Baziak bestimmt, nachdem sechs andere Kandidaten abgelehnt worden waren. Wojtyla galt als ,apolitisch", was zu seiner Wahl fuhrte. Spater wurde er Kardinal und am 16. Oktober 1978 uberraschend zum 264. Papst gewahlt. Als Johannes Paul II. spielte er eine bedeutende Rolle beim Sturz des Kommunismus in Osteuropa. Kardinal Josef Ratzinger, der als Strippenzieher hinter der Papstwahl gilt, betont im Vorwort, dass Johannes Paul II. stets fur Uberraschungen bereit war. Sein Pontifikat war mit einem Aufruf zur Neuevangelisierung verbunden, um den Glauben in einer zunehmend gottlosen Welt neu zu verkunden. Das Buch beginnt 1920 mit Wojtylas Geburt in Wadowice, wo er katholische und judische Freunde hatte, was seine Perspektive pragte. Kein anderer Papst hatte so bestandige positive Beziehungen zu den Juden. Die Bilder stammen von Josef Albert Slominski, der seit 1955 alle funf Papste portratiert hat. …
