Nanotechnology seems to escape boundaries and definitions. The "Rush to Nanoscale" spreads throughout different sites and arenas, involving a multiplicity of actors, meanings and spaces in which they emerge. The 'uncertainty of nanotechnology' appears to be both a condition and a consequence of this situation. This volume adds to the collective effort of charting the multiple and heterogeneous dimensions that characterize nanotechnology, by analyzing the numerous modalities through which different stakeholders and actors provide definitions, attribute meaning and sense to nanoenabled innovations. The chapters of the book attempt to highlight how nanotechnologies, their discourse, and their actual and potential implications cannot be isolated in laboratories, factories, markets and separate discussion arenas. Also, the volume examines how it is apparently not possible to bind and/or confine the definition of nanotechnology by referring exclusively to present-day research and applications, as well as to geographical, cultural and even disciplinary boundaries. Considered together, this collection of essays suggests that the 'societal experiment' of nanotechnology has to be explored with a vocabulary that is not just scientific and technical, in order to cross the frontiers between multiple domains, actors, identities, translations and negotiation processes that occur in the nanotechnology field. 143pp.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book disentangles the complex meanings of responsibility in nanotechnology development by focusing on its theoretical and empirical dimensions. The notion of responsibility is extremely diversified in the public discourse of nanoscale technologies. Addressed are major disciplinary perspectives working on nanotechnology, e.g. philosophy, sociology, and political science, as well as the major multidisciplinary areas relevant to the innovation process, e.g. technology assessment and ethics. Furthermore, the interplay between such expertises, disciplines, and research programmes in providing a multidisciplinary understanding of responsibility is emphasized.

Añadir al carritoCondición: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | The present volume elucidates the scope of responsibility in science and technology governance by way of assimilating insights gleaned from sociological theory and STS and by investigating the ways in which responsibility unfolds in social processes. Drawing on these theoretical perspectives, the volume goes on to review a ¿heuristic model¿ of responsibility. Such a model provides a simple, tentative, though no less coherent analytical framework for further examining the idea of responsibility, its transformations, configurations and contradictions.

Edizioni Università di Trieste -- In our contemporary technology-driven societies, every aspect of life connected to our bodies such as birth, reproduction, sexuality, gender, and aging is profoundly influenced by technoscientific advances. The body is no longer a fixed entity but a dynamic battleground, constantly reshaped by technologies. This compelling book delves into the evolving interface between human bodies and technoscience, exploring themes like technoscientific imaginaries, the cyborg concept, bodily transformations through technologies, datification, and biomedicalization. Approaching these topics from a Science and Technology Studies (STS) perspective, the book poses essential questions about the relationship between technology and the body: What are the consequences of our increasingly mutable physicality? What analytical frameworks can we use to study this ever-changing, hybrid body? How does STS help us understand the material and discursive construction of corporeality through technoscience? And how do our bodies, in turn, help shape the very nature of technoscience? This book is of interest for scholars and students in Science and Technology Studies (STS), Sociology of the Body, and Social Theory, offering fresh insights into the crucial interplay between scientific knowledge, technology, and bodily experience. It invites readers to reconsider the essential questions regarding the interplay between technoscience and corporeality.
