"This book identifies medieval sites and charts the development of the town from the scatter of fermtouns shown on early maps. It goes on to sketch the social history of a community shaped by the industrial revolution. The authors look at the history and archaeological potential of key sites in the town, to inform the future management of Barrhead's historic environment." No inscriptions. Excellent condition.

"Part of the Scottish Burgh Survey, this book provides an accessible and broad-ranging synthesis of existing knowledge on historic Dunbar, as well as offering conservation guidance for future development. Dunbar's rich past is reflected in the diversity of its surviving archaeology - prehistoric enclosures to the south of the town, Iron Age and Anglian settlement in Castle Park, the medieval castle, its friary, tolbooth, parish church, as well as later buildings such as the Belhaven Brewery and the harbour warehouses. The authors look at the archaeological potential of key sites in the town, to direct more detailed research and further the conservation of Dunbar's heritage.". SIGNED COPY.

This burgh survey weaves together a highly readable summary of the recorded information on Dunfermline's history and archaeology. Dunfermline was the seat of Malcolm Canmore and here he married Margaret. Several of their sons ware kings of Scotland and with royal patronage the Benedictine Abbey became one of the most important monasteries in Scotland. It was the birth or burial place of many Scottish kings, notably King Robert the Bruce. The medieval burgh flourished by serving the needs of visiting royalty and humbler pilgrims to the shrine of St Margaret. The Reformation and then the departure of the Scottish court to London led to a period of decline. But from the early eighteenth century Dunfermline reinvented itself as a leading centre for high quality linens, initially by hand loom weaving. Then the second half of the nineteenth century saw the rapid growth of damask linen manufacture in grand Victorian factories, the last survivors now being converted to other uses. This period of prosperity, together with the generosity of Andrew Carnegie, endowed Dunfermline with many fine buildings - some now in reduced circumstances. The authors draw on their detailed knowledge and the researches of the many volunteers in the Dunfermline Burgh Survey; Community Project to provide timely guidance on Dunfermline's rich archaeological potential.
