Having had an exemplary Civil War, in the postwar navy, Selfridge taught at the Naval Academy and then "performed notable service on expeditions to map parts of Latin America. Promoted to commander in 1869, he oversaw in the next four years three surveys of Panama for a canal and explored deep into Colombia. His reports, published in 1874, ultimately won for him the Legion of Honor from France and honorary membership in the Royal Geographical Society of Belgium. Four years later he took the gunboat 'Enterprise' on a surveying voyage to the upper Amazon and Madeira rivers. In 1879 he represented the United States at the congress in Paris on interoceanic canals organized by Ferdinand de Lesseps" (Malcolm Muir for ANB).
