Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: New. In the middle decades of the sixteenth century, the republican city-state of Florence--birthplace of the Renaissance--failed. In its place the Medici family created a principality, becoming first dukes of Florence and then grand dukes of Tuscany. The Fruit of Liberty examines how this transition occurred from the perspective of the Florentine patricians who had dominated and controlled the republic. The book analyzes the long, slow social and cultural transformations that predated, accompanied, and facilitated the institutional shift from republic to principality, from citizen to subject.More than a chronological narrative, this analysis covers a wide range of contributing factors to this transition, from attitudes toward office holding, clothing, and the patronage of artists and architects to notions of self, family, and gender. Using a wide variety of sources including private letters, diaries, and art works, Nicholas Baker explores how the language, images, and values of the republic were reconceptualized to aid the shift from citizen to subject. He argues that the creation of Medici principality did not occur by a radical break with the past but with the adoption and adaptation of the political culture of Renaissance republicanism.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover, xii + 265 pages, b&w images in text, NOT ex-library. Gentle handling wear, book looks clean and bright, text is unmarked, free of inscriptions and stamps; firm secure binding. Issued without a dust jacket. -- Offers a comprehensive and insightful examination of Florence during a transformative period in its history. This volume brings together a collection of essays that explore new perspectives on Florence's social, political, economic, and cultural developments from the late medieval to the early modern period. The book begins by setting the stage with an overview of Florence's unique position in the early modern world, highlighting its role as a hub of commerce, art, and intellectual activity. Each chapter delves into different aspects of Florentine life, drawing on a wealth of primary sources and the latest scholarly research to provide fresh interpretations and uncover previously overlooked dimensions of the city's history. Key themes explored in the book include the dynamics of political power and governance, the impact of economic changes on social structures, and the cultural flourishing that made Florence a center of the Renaissance. The essays also address the interactions between Florence and other regions, examining how the city was influenced by and in turn influenced broader European and Mediterranean contexts. One of the standout features of "Florence in the Early Modern World" is its focus on the experiences of various social groups, from the elite families who wielded political and economic power to the artisans, merchants, and ordinary citizens who contributed to the city's vibrant community. The book sheds light on the everyday lives of Florentines, their customs, and their responses to the challenges and opportunities of their time. Additionally, the volume places significant emphasis on the cultural and intellectual movements that originated in or passed through Florence, including humanism, art, and literature. It explores how these movements shaped and were shaped by the city's unique environment, leaving a lasting legacy on Western culture. "Florence in the Early Modern World: New Perspectives" is an essential resource for scholars, students, and anyone interested in the history of Florence and its impact on the early modern world. This book not only deepens our understanding of one of the most influential cities in history but also provides a model for studying other urban centers in the medieval and early modern periods.
