Hardcover. Condición: Good. First Edition. A surprisingly sturdy, attractive exemplar of one of the major works of the German physician-philosopher, Martin Schurig, a continuation of his series, Gynaecologia historico-medica, a further contribution to his studies of conception, embryology, birth and maturation. This exemplar published in Dresden and Leipzig, Germany, simultaneously, in 1731, an apparent First Edition, published by Christophe Hekelii, Fil. Bound in Imperial octavo hardcover format in full leather from that period, with five raised bands to spine and quite elaborate gilding thereat, being of fleurs-de-lis, red leather label, with gilt title stamped sharply thereinto. Front hinge starting to crack; fore-edges rubbed, leather at joints lightly cracking, otherwise quite firmly holding. Heavy toning at outset, text is heavily toned, margins cleaner and brighter. Precious dealer-stamp inside front flap at upper edge, a French bookseller in London. All edges red-stained, and with sewn-in silk linen bookmark still attached. Marbled, rubricated end-papers front and rear. Text wholly in Latin. The author Martin Schurig (1656?1733) was a German physician who first used the term "Gynaecologia" in 1730, just the year prior, "following Johann Peter Lotichius who wrote "Gynaicologia" in 1630" (Wikipedia). Schurig's holy trinity was Spermatologia (1720), Muliebria (1729), and Gynaecologia (1730) (Wikipedia). Schurig became a physician first in Dresden on March 15, 1694, City Doctor (!) and practiced until his death. "Spermatologia Historico-Medica" (a.k.a. "Spermatologia") inaugurated the 10 tomes that traversed human anatomy and physiology (Havelock Ellis, Studies in the Psychology of Sex, 1914; Joseph Needham, 1959; Conrad Zirkle, 1936). From the personal library of Gershon Legman, as transmitted through his fabulous widow, Judith Legman. [2], 656 pp., [22] pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.…
