In comparison to the earlier plastic castings, these castings provide a better signal-noise relation for a careful and improved digital sound. Better voice intelligibility has thereby been striven for, as compared to the first edition. In Wien und in Prag etablierte sich anfang der 20er Jahre des 19.Jahrhunderts eine osterreichische Spielwerkmanufaktur, angfuhrt von den Bruderen Anton und Josef Olbrich in Wien und der Firma Rzebitscheik in Prag, die bis in die Mitte des Jahrhunderts eine wichtige und ernstzunehmende…Konkurrenz zur Schweizer Spieldosenindustrie darstellte. Die Prager und Wiener Instrumente wurden auch ins Ausland verkauft und konnten Preise auf nationalen und internationalen Ausstellungen erringen. Die zweite CD der Serie steht nunmehr ganz im zeichen der Oper. Die hier ausgewahlten Opernmelodien spannen einen Bogen von Rossinis Barbier (1816) bis zu Verdis Rigoletto (1851), und die Instrumente, auf denen sie erklingen stammen aus einem Zeitraum von etwa 50 Jahren. Die italienische Oper dominiert eindeutig, beginnend mit Werken Rossinis, gegen Mitte des Jahrhunderts ubernahmen die Werke Bellinis und Donzittis die Fuhrung, spater dann gefolgt von den Opern Verdis. Auch die grand opera hinterliess ihre Spuren und ist hier mit Melodien aus Meyerbeers Opern vertreten.\nAuch Richard Wagners Musik fand in das Repertoire der Prager und Wiener Spielwerke eingang. So wie bei der Tanzmusik wurden auch auf dem Gebiet der Oper national Musikstromungen von den Spielwerkherstellern berucksichtigt. Erkels Hunyadi Laszlo steht hier als Beispiel fur einige Melodien aus Opern, die wiederholt aus Spielwerken zu finden waren. Die Transkripitionen, die so eingerichtet sind, dass uber einer klaren Begleitung die Melodie gut erkennbar wird, ist naturlich fur dies Arte von Musik, bei der der Melodie uberhaupt die grosste Bedeutung zukommt, von besonderem Vorteil. Diese Vorzuge sind speziell in solchen Stucken, die reiche Koloraturpassagen und Kadenzen bringen, zu erkennnen. Die hier vorgestellten Tonaufnahmen wurden unter dem Pratext gemacht, eine Quelle fur weitere wissenschaftliche Forschung zu erschliessen indem sie Favoritstucke fruherer Zeiten im originalen Klang der historischen Musikautomaten bewahren und einen Einblick in eine authentische Auffuhrungspraxis ermoglichen. "Das Phonogrammarchiv verfügt als ältestes Schallarchiv der Welt über einen B…estand von rund 4000 historischen mechanischen Tonträgern (Phonogramme und Grammophonplatten), die von der Jahrhundertwende bis ca. 1950 aufgenommen und archiviert wurden. Mit der Gesamtausgabe seiner historischen Bestände betritt das Phonogrammarchiv auch im Kreis der internationalen Gemeinschaft seiner Schwesterinstitutionen Neuland. Vielfach stellen die historischen Bestände die ältesten ihrer Art dar, oft dokumentieren sie Kulturen und Sprachen, die in der Zeit seit ihrer Aufnahme starken Veränderungen unterworfen wurden, bisweilen sind sie auch Zeugnisse längst vergangener Kulturen bzw. Ausdrucksformen. Daher gewinnen die Sammlungen über ihren wissenschaftlichen Aspekt hinaus auch Bedeutung für weitere, kulturell und historisch interessierte Kreise, insbesondere in ihren Ursprungsländern. Mit der Herausgabe dieser historischen Tondokumente auf CD möchte das Phonogrammarchiv einen leichten, dezentralen Zugriff ermöglichen, der nicht nur das Tondokument selbst betrifft. Auf einer CD-Rom werden die Originalprotokolle in Form digitaler Bilder veröffentlicht, während ein Kommentarteil aus rezenter Sicht zu den historischen Beständen, insbesondere zu ihrem Entstehen, Stellung nimmt, um eine weitere Bearbeitung zu erleichtern, ohne diese jedoch vorwegzunehmen. Orientierungs-Transkriptionen/Transliterationen der aufgenommenen Melodien bzw. Texte sollen den Zugang zu den wegen ihrer historischen Tonqualität oft schwer wahrnehmbaren Aufnahmen erleichtern. Die Serie "The First Expeditions 1901" wurde bewußt an den Beginn dieses Editionsvorhabens gestellt, weil sie auf eindrucksvolle Weise die Reisetauglichkeit des neu konstruierten Archiv-Phonographen dokumentiert. Milan von Reöetar, ein bedeutender Slawist der damaligen Zeit, wollte Dialektgrenzen im Gebiet zwischen Drau und Save erkunden. Paul Kretschmer nützte im Rahmen seiner Arbeiten zu einer historischen Grammatik der griechischen Sprache die Möglichkeit der Tonaufzeichnung. In Zusammenhang mit der Durchführung eines großen naturkundlichen Projektes der damaligen kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften entstanden die ältesten Tondokumente der Guarani-Sprache mit dem im Phonogrammarchiv neu entwickelten Gerät, das zwecks Erprobung auch unter extremen Klimabedingungen mitgegeben wurde. Von diesen drei Expeditionen sind Berichte überliefert, in denen übereinstimmend festgestellt wurde, daß der Phonograph zwar als Schallaufzeichnungsgerät seinen Zweck erfüllte, die Handhabung aber außerordentlich große Schwierigkeiten bereitete. Da die Transportmöglichkeiten wegen des enormen Gewichtes sehr schwierig waren, die Gewährsleute zum Gerät und nicht das Gerät zu den Gewährsleuten gebracht werden mußte, und zudem große Scheu seitens der Gewährsleute vor der neuen Technologie bestand, war zwar die Ausbeute an Aufnahmen gering, doch zählen diese Aufnahmen zu den ältesten Dokumenten ihrer Art und und stellen somit ein bedeutendes kulturelles Erbe dar. / In presenting a complete edition of its historical material dating from the time before the introduction of tape recording in 1950/51, the Phonogrammarchiv breaks new ground among the international community of related institutions. The historical material comprises ca. 4000 recordings, ca. 3200 on so-called Phonogramme and ca. 800 on gramophone discs. The decision in favor of a complete edition was to a large extent motivated by increased interest in these recordings from outside the narrow circle of research institutions concerned with sound archiving. In many cases, the historical recordings are the earliest of their kind, documenting cultures and languages which have since been subject to fundamental changes. Some of the recordings preserve cultures or styles of expression that no longer exist in the form preserved here. These collections, therefore, are also attracting the attention of a general public interested in culture and histroy, especially in the regions of their origin. The edition of these historical sound documents on CD is meant to make possible easy access, not only to the sound documents as such. They are therefore accompanied by the original protocols, published on a CD-Rom as digital images, while a commentary section briefly discusses the historical material from a modern perspective in order to facilitate further evaluation. Of course, although these commentaries cannot anticipate or replace a more exhaustive treatment, they can provide useful information about the circumstances under which the recordings were made. Transliterations/transcriptions of the recorded melodies and texts will help in gaining access to the recordings' contents, which, due to their historical sound quality, are often difficult to hear. "The First Expeditions" was chosen to open the edition, since it was for these expeditions to prove the newly developed Archiv-Phonograph fit for its tasks. These expeditions of 1901 provided an ideal opportunity for putting it to the test. The reports from these expeditions not only predicated the continuation of the enterprise as such, but also played a role in establishing the Phonogrammarchiv as a lasting institution. These reports were also to lead to substantial improvements of the Archiv-Phonograph, which was employed for field recordings until 1931, and which was also used by institutions outside of Austria in Zurich, Zagreb in the Netherlands./p"(Verlagstext).
