Aus 400 britischen Kampfflugzeugen flogen etwa 900 Sprengbomben, 90 000 Stabbrandbomben, über 17 000 Phosphorbomben und 18 Minenbomben auf Leipzig. Die Stadt brannte lichterloh. Der von Deutschland ausgegangene Krieg war nun auch in Deutschlands damals fünftgrößte Stadt zurückgekehrt. Mindestens 1717 Menschen starben in dieser einen Stunde, wahrscheinlich viel mehr. Von den 34 819 Gebäuden wurden 18 650 (53,4 %) beschädigt - davon 3350 (9,6 %) total, 5 100 (14 %) schwer und 10 200 (29,2 %) leicht. Die Druckereien und Verlage der Ostvorstadt sanken in Trümmer, im Musikviertel das Gewandhaus und ein Teil der Universitätsbibliothek, in der Innenstadt das Hauptgebäude (Augusteum) der Universität, die Hauptpost, das Museum der bildenden Künste, ein Teil des Hauptbahnhofs, die östliche Seite der prächtigen Katharinenstraße, ehrwürdige Barockhäuser am Markt, die Große Feuerkugel (wo der junge Goethe gewohnt hatte) zwischen Universitätsstraße und Neumarkt. 15 000 Tonnen Sprengstoff seien es gewesen, die an diesem Wintermorgen über Leipzig niedergingen. Sie zerstörten auch das 1896 errichtete Städtische Kaufhaus und dessen 150 Jahre älteren Nordflügel - die Heimstatt der Leipziger Stadtbibliothek. Die Geschichte der Bibliothek beginnt mit einer Stiftung des 1677 gestorbenen Advokaten und Finanzbeamten am Oberhofgericht Huldreich Groß.
