Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. It's not often that a children's book, or any book, offers a re-set regarding how we regard the world through our senses--so many distractions to contend with in these modern times. A new book, THE SENSES-TAKER, by artist and illustrator Julie Schachter, does just that, by following the journey of a young boy, Abel Adams, who uses numbers to safely evaluate the world around him. The tale follows his transition from being a compulsive counter of things, to experiencing feelings beyond the surface. A dream-like visitation by an elf-sized man, a self-described Senses-Taker, opens Abel's eyes to what he's been missing. The miniature bureaucrat presents a treasure chest of drawers for almost every kind of sense, from SENSE OF DIRECTION, SENSE OF SMELL, SENSE OF HUMOR, to COMMON SENSE and NONSENSE. This entertaining, humorous, and well-illustrated book, harks back to a former time of tree-lined Main Streets, doctors who make house-calls, a gay couple (in this case, two female doctors), a mailman bribing with dog biscuits and a small town's soda fountain. The book encourages a recharge we could all use. It's nice to be reminded, occasionally, of how to just take a breath and look around, smell the roses- cell/phones, laptops, emails and other links disabled. Maybe take some time out to enjoy a midnight moon, the flight of pillow feathers and magical birds circling, a disco shower of light, urging on Abel-and ourselves to make time for a sense of wonder. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Artist Julie Schachter has created 100 pinhole photographic portraits of artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers, actors and supporters thereof, who sat before a hollowed-out 1980 Who's Who book, which she refashioned into a camera. Among those celebrated in these pages are Ant Farm founder Chip Lord; artists Doug Hall and Diane Andrews Hall; painters/sculptors M. Louise Stanley, Katherine Sherwood, C. G. Simonds, Clayton Bailey; performance/video/installation artists George Coates, Paul Cotton, Lowell Darling, Spalding Gray, Doug Hollis, Joe Rees, Willie Boy Walker; filmmakers Juliet Bashore, William Farley, Jon Jost, Bill Kimberlin, George Manupelli, Rick Schmidt, Wayne Wang; writers Tamim Ansary, Ruth Reichl; musicians David Behrman, Molly Holm, David Rosenboom, and members of the bands Flipper and The Mutants. Schachter's book represents the history of creative people, who interacted and formed a kind of West Coast art movement in Northern California in the late 1900s. This item is printed on demand. Condición: Fine. First Edition. Two silver gelatin matted prints, each signed and titled by American photographer Julie Schachter in pencil on print rectos and overmats. Both Fine, measuring 10x8"; mat 14x11". One features lead singer Johnny Rotten with his eyes closed in a kind of trance. The other photo shows him belting out vocals, flanked by punk icon and bassist Sid Vicious and guitarist Steve Jones. Fantastic black and white prints of The Sex Pistols during their final, disastrous show at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, the culmination of a US tour marked by public indifference and hostility that broke the band. The show ended when lead singer Johnny Rotten asked the audience, "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?", dropped the mic and walked off stage. The band broke up shortly thereafter. And with that the first era of punk ended as well. Photographer Julia Schachter writes in the foreword of her book San Fransisco Bay Area Punk/New Wave 1978-1980, "In 1978, when my artist boyfriend was seduced away by the burgeoning Punk scene and joined a band, I went along and took pictures. Many of these photographs were shot at shows hosted by Dirk Dirksen at the Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco's North Beach district. Others took place at various venues in the Bay Area. Welcome to the mosh pit!" Both these images appear in her book. Signed.…
