Covers are very clean and intact except for some darkening, a few small stains, and slight wear to extremities. A Very Good copy. This is a concise historical account about Christian missionaries and their missionary work carried out for evangelizing the Sioux on the Dakota Reservation. Among the organizations described in this book in relation to missionary work for the Sioux are the Christian Endeavor Society and the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). The following are the chapters or sections of text included herein: "Prefatory Article," "Indian Life at Pine Ridge," "Missionary Work at Pine Ridge," "The Santees--Educating the Indian Youth," "A Visit to the Yankton Agency," "A Conference of Christian Indians," "Endeavorers Consider the Indian Work," and "Indian Questions. From a Christian Point of View." Author S. C. Gilman highlights specific examples of the missionary work in the region and the results of it while giving the Western Christian perspective of Indigenous Peoples and culture in his account. Gilman refers to Indigenous Peoples of the region as "savage" and "uncivilized" but is hopeful for the conversion of the Sioux to Christianity and for them to adopt Western dress and customs. He commends the use of boarding schools for young Indigenous boys and girls and the conversion of Indigenous Peoples. Gilman clearly states that the main goal of these boarding schools is to train students to become teachers or missionaries. He writes that thousands of Sioux have converted to Christianity and that some of them are helping with further evangelical work. Gilman speaks highly of two Sioux men, among others, who converted to Christianity, Charles A. Eastman and Jonas N. Spottedbear. Throughout the book, Gilman refers to many different individuals and other Christian organizations, schools, or societies helping with the missionary work. In the back is the "Christian perspective" of the controversial "Indian Question"; the "Christian Perspective" ultimately advocates for continued evangelism of Indigenous Peoples.…
