Jahrhundert widerspiegelt. Die Enquiry beinhaltet eine bis dato noch nie so ausgeführte Radikalisierung der Wirkungsweise von Ästhetik. Burkes Enquiry mag auf den ersten Blick eher den Eindruck einer anthropologischen Erörterung erwecken. In diesem Buch wird gezeigt, wie Burkes Theorie dennoch auf Werke der Literatur und der bildenden Kunst angewendet werden kann. Es wird untersucht, in welcher Hinsicht Burkes Erörterungen über das Erhabene Einfluss auf die Arbeiten von ausgewählten Künstlern hatten, und wie diese das Erhabene in ihren literarischen und künstlerischen Arbeiten anwenden. Anhand von konkreten Beispielen aus der Literatur (Ann Radcliffe) und Malerei (William Turner) wird zudem exemplarisch aufgezeigt, wie es durch eine Verwendung von Elementen aus Burkes Enquiry zu einer erhabenen Wirkung im Leser bzw. Betrachter kommen kann.
