Half-Leather. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very good copy of a scarce work on Mathematics by Samuel Cunn, revised by Edmund Stone, with black and white frontispiece and large folding plate. Cunn is best known for his translation of Euclid's work in to English, and in 1720 he published a 'corrected' edition of Newton's Arithmetica Universalis. Edmund Stone's history is not recorded, other than he was the son of the gardener for the Duke of Argyll's estates. Apparently the Duke discovered him reading Newton's Principia and so sponsored his academic career. His Treatise on Mathematical Instruments was published in 1723 and in 1725 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. His book 'A New Mathematical Dictionary' was published in 1726. It was in part derived from Latin versions of the works of the German philosopher Christian Wolff. This copy has been recently rebound in half leather and buckram. There are gilt lined raised bands to spine and gilt titles. New endpapers have been added. Contents: 2 blank leaves (unopened); frontispiece plate (which doubles as an advertisement for Thomas Heath); title page; The Revisor to the Reader by Edmund Stone 4pp; Contents listing 2pp; text with decorative headpieces, initial capitals and diagrams in the text 213pp; Finis; publisher's advertisements 3pp; large folding plate; one final blank. The binding is in near fine condition; text with browning toning to edges, a couple of ink corrections to numbers on p 97, and a small ink mark in generally very good condition. The large plate has an extensive repair across the top corner but there is no loss.…
