Dazu bedarf es, wie Wagenschein schreibt, einer "Didaktik mit Herz", die das eigene Denken der Kinder achtet, ihr eigenes, unverwechselbares Bedürfnis, etwas zu durchschauen, "dahinter zu kommen". Später nennt er dieses pädagogische Prinzip das "genetische", nämlich ein Hervorgehen des wissenschaftlichen Denkens aus dem kindlichen und dem jugendlichen Suchen und Finden, Denken und Entdecken. Über seine Motive und auch über die Entwicklungen innerhalb seines Lebenswerkes berichtet er in diesem Buch, das er eine "pädagogische Biografie" nannte und der er den bis heute gültigen Titel gab: "Erinnerungen für morgen". Er schildert die Begegnung mit denen, die für sein Werk und seine eigene Auffassung von Pädagogik wichtig waren, wie Paul Geheeb und später Minna Specht von der "Odenwaldschule", oder seine Kontakte zu Otto Friedrich Bollnow, Wilhelm und Andreas Flitner, Eduard Spranger, Theodor Litt, Wolfgang Metzger und viele mehr.
