Illustrated with color drawings, color photographs, black-and-white drawings, maps and charts/tables. "Harold E. Moore, Jr., a Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor of Botany at Cornell University was the acknowledged expert on the palms of the world. When he died in 1980 he left unfinished his life's goal of producing a "Genera Palmarum", a guide to the world's palms at the generic level. Using the extensive collections and notes left by Dr. Moore, Natalie W. Uhl and John Dransfield have critically reviewed all genera that have been described and completed a classification of palms. In "Genera Palmarum," the morphology, anatomy, ecology and distribution, fossil record and evolution of the palms are discussed as essential background to the classification. The second and larger part of the book is devoted to accounts of the 200 genera of palms that are recognized. Each genus is described in detail, accompanied by illustrations by Marion Ruff Sheehan. The relationships of each genus are indicated or suggested, and all the genera are arranged in a formal hierarchy. An attempt has been made to avoid the use of the obscure terminology that characterizes many publications on palms, and this, together with an illustrated glossary, should make the book usable and indispensable both to professional botanists and to nonprofessionals alike. Palms are economically of immense importance today as sources of food, oil, fiber, and building material. In the tropics many human communities, especially subsistence agriculturalists depend on wild palms for their survival. Some palms have become severely threatened by over-exploitation and by destruction of native habitats. Palms are also of special botanical interest because of their early occurrence in the fossil record and because of their remarkable diversity. At a time when interest in this most important but long neglected family is increasing, "Genera Palmarum" offers a firm taxonomic base for palm research." - from the inner front jacket flap.
