Very Good edition with some foxing to the pages and boards and rubbing to the pages in a Very Good+ dustjacket with some slight soiling. Previous owner's notations within the text and on the front free endpaper; This is a memoir by Jacques Soustelle, a Fren…ch ethnologist who worked in Mexico from the 1930s through the 1960s. Soustelle is best known for his studies of the Nahua people, but his writing is also insightful and humorous. His book is divided into four parts: First, Soustelle describes his early experiences in Mexico and his fascination with the country and its people. Second, he describes his work as an ethnologist, including his studies of the Nahua people, the Mayans, and the Tarahumara Indians. Third, he reflects on his experiences living in Mexico and his observations of the country's transformation over the years. Finally, he offers his thoughts on the state of anthropology and the role of ethnography in the social sciences. The Four Suns is a unique and insightful memoir of a French ethnologist who spent many years living and studying in Mexico.; B & W Photographs; 256 pages.

Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. Octavo, light leaf-green cloth, spine embossed with gilt lettering, 158 pp., frontispiece, illustrated with eight black-and-white woodcuts. Spine ends bumped and rubbed, edges of spine and covers lightly rubbed, corners of covers bumped, very light foxing on endpapers and edges of text block, fore-edge and tail of… text block untrimmed, fore-edge of several pages throughout uncut, small navy and cream Hugh Rees Ltd sticker on lower-right edge of paste-down endpaper; overall a very good edition. Translated by T. E. Lawrence under the name of J. H. Ross, The Forest Giant was first published in English in 1924. This 1935 edition of Lawrence's fine translation (published shortly after his death) is illustrated with exquisite woodcuts by Scottish artist Agnes Miller Parker, and includes a publisher's note and dedication that are both absent from the original edition. The publisher notes that Lawrence's translation of the text is 'very free', more a 'rendering' rather than a close translation. Like Lawrence, Romanian-born author Rudolf Bernhardt wrote The Forest Giant under a pseudonym. His story follows a young protagonist on their journey of self-discovery, his growing maturity likened to the life of the forest's giant sequoia. O'Brien, A095.

Añadir al carritoTranslated from the French by J. H. Ross [T. E. Lawrence]. Illustrated with Woodcuts by Agnes Miller Parker. Pp. 160(last blank), frontispiece, plus 8 plates; green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, boards a trifle soiled, edges lightly worn, bottom fore-corners slightly bruised; fore and bottom edges uncut; the text block faintly…browned, scattered light foxing; Jonathan Cape, London, 1935. Second U.K. edition. O'Brien A095. *Lacking the dust wrapper. 'By his own request Lawrence was given the French work Le Gigantesque to translate soon after his expulsion from the R.A.F. and re-enlistment in the Tank Corps in 1923. He appears to have been motivated both by a need for funds and by the wish to fill his free time.' [O'Brien p. 74]. In 1935, Cape published this edition, with illustrations by Agnes Miller Parker. It contains a new publisher's note and the author's dedication to Professor Simon Dupley, which Lawrence had included in his translation but which, at his own suggestion, had been omitted from the 1924 edition. Adrien Le Corbeau was a pseudonym of Romanian writer Rudolf Bernhardt (1886-1932).
