Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Psychology - Social Psychology, grade: 1,0, Uppsala University, language: English, abstract: Symbolic Interactionists are also referred to as 'cultural romantics.'2 They sympathize withoutsiders and underdogs, believe in the contingency of self and society and envision social reality asan ongoing interaction of people, which entails change and transformation.3 On the other hand,Symbolic Interactionism reflects not only a subjective study of human experience, but it alsoattempts to evolve an objective (social) science which holds man as a product of society and one'sself as 'only existing in the definite relationships to other selves.'4 This dichotomy appears to befairly interesting when it comes to social phenomena that are assumingly either mainly subjective orobjective. Love tends to be seen as a merely subjective experience of the self. Falling in love withsomebody seems to be possible under the most incredible circumstances, not complying to anyrules, being mysterious and unpredictable. The 'beloved other' prompts feelings and might getpositioned on a throne for the most inexplicable (personal) reasons. But who is the 'beloved-other'really Why is he or she privileged to ascend the throne Are the reasons for loving this particularperson barely subjective or might they be rooted in society and hence influenced and induced by anobjective reality Do we really choose our 'beloved-other' or is he/she chosen by society.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Psychology - Social Psychology, grade: 1,0, Uppsala University, language: English, abstract: In the age of social networking and music streaming, playlists are a common tool for organizing, sharing or exchanging music in the digital realm. Most research, however, emphasizes mainly political, legal, and ethical constraints of music sharing practices yet, neglects their social impact. Thus, this paper investigates the social-psychological foundation of the playlist and analyses its functionality in establishing social relations and communication. Following the theories of Cooley, Mead, Simmel and Solomon, I conducted and analysed interviews with young Swedish men and women, in which they talked about their experiences and attitudes towards playlists. Moreover, all participants compiled their own personal playlist, based on certain personality traits, which were aimed to be recognized by the others during the focus group discussion. The analysis of the data yields the following conclusions: The playlist is a social object, facilitating new forms of communication. The social nature of the playlist is based on the transformation from objective- into subjective culture. By internalizing new technologies, such as the playlist, objects gain social value, thus mere musical content becomes a social form. It is through sharing and exchanging musical compilations that the playlist, as a social form, serves as a vehicle or medium, facilitating new forms of sociation and communication. The communicative function of the playlist is due to its construction through emotions as uniquely subjective judgements, based on the 'I' as an emotional self-feeling. Thus, musical compilations take part in the self-construction process, and can serve as a tool for the symbolic expression of the self. Moreover, the analysis points out that there are differences in how well certain parts of the self can be communicated by a playlist. Emotional expressions of the self are translated into particular universal music patterns most successfully. Furthermore, the analysis shows that some people like to browse through the playlists of others and judge them thereupon, which results in some type of musical voyeurism, termed 'playlistism.' In conclusion, I argue that the musical playlist is both, socially implicated and socially implicating.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Communications - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, Uppsala University, language: English, abstract: Children's books have been around since the early 1500s. They reflect the traditional values of the times, yet they still serve as a socializing tool transmitting values from one generation to the next in today's society (Gooden and Gooden 2001). Only in the latter years of the twentieth century has the picturebook become a serious object of academic study (Lewis 2001). Researchers began to take notice of the (under-)representation of women in children's books and asserted commonly that reducing sexism in children's reading materials is crucial for developing an equitable and democratic society.Although previous research has examined the representation of gender and race in children's literature extensively, there is, however, a major gap, focusing on the portrayal of New Zealand's indigenous Polynesian people - specifically, the Maori woman. Little is known about the visibility of Maori women in print media (Evans 1994) and even less about their depiction in children's pictur Elektronisches Buch. In order to address this gap in the literature, this paper investigates the visual and verbal representation of Maori women in contemporary New Zealand pictur Elektronisches Buch. Following the theories of Peter L. Berger, Thomas Luckmann and George Herbert Mead I developed a model illustrating the circular process of picturebook communication. Moreover those theories serve as a theoretical framework, constituting the subsequent content analysis. As I examined the characters of Maori women in different New Zealand pictur Elektronisches Buch, I identified three typifications, constituting the identity of an indigenous New Zealand woman in those narratives. The Teacher, the Entertainer and the Spiritual Maori woman reinvent and reproduce, yet delimit and constrain the identity of Maori women in contemporary pictur Elektronisches Buch. Those books fail to intertwine and integrate the two differing cultures of Maori and Pakeha (New Zealander of European descent), in their storyline, and neglect current struggles or conflicts in the social reality of New Zealand.Based on one outstanding book, I drew the conclusion that it is through integrating the two differing symbolic universes of Pakeha and Maori into the storyline, that the multiple roles carried by Maori women can be acknowledged and an authentic portrayal of Maori women is achieved.…

Neuware -Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Communications - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, Uppsala University, language: English, abstract: Children¿s books have been around since the early 1500s. They reflect the traditional values of the times, yet they still serve as a socializing tool transmitting values from one generation to the next in today¿s society (Gooden and Gooden 2001). Only in the latter years of the twentieth century has the picturebook become a serious object of academic study (Lewis 2001). Researchers began to take notice of the (under-)representation of women in children¿s books and asserted commonly that reducing sexism in children¿s reading materials is crucial for developing an equitable and democratic society.Although previous research has examined the representation of gender and race in children¿s literature extensively, there is, however, a major gap, focusing on the portrayal of New Zealand¿s indigenous Polynesian people ¿ specifically, the Maori woman. Little is known about the visibility of Maori women in print media (Evans 1994) and even less about their depiction in children¿s pictur Elektronisches Buch. Those books fail to intertwine and integrate the two differing cultures of Maori and Pakeha (New Zealander of European descent), in their storyline, and neglect current struggles or conflicts in the social reality of New Zealand.Based on one outstanding book, I drew the conclusion that it is through integrating the two differing symbolic universes of Pakeha and Maori into the storyline, that the multiple roles carried by Maori women can be acknowledged and an authentic portrayal of Maori women is achieved.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 136 pp. Englisch.…
