Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 586 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | A job seeking former Army Ranger, hot and tired from his long drive, stops for the night at a Las Vegas Motel. He wants a beer. Across the wide street an all-night market beckons him. Looking both ways he starts to run and is immediately struck by an unseen object hurling him high in the air and dropping him to the ground with a mind-numbing thud. He's dragged to safety by a large, verbally complaining, furry black dog. David Manning's life is changed from that moment forward. He enters a world known to only a handful of Americans, and a few others. "Area 51" "No Trespassing" "Deadly Force May Be Used" He is recruited to save the country from treacherous extremists who want to overthrow the current government and rule the country as a dictatorship. Manning has an improbable consortium of team members to assist him in the daunting task of saving democracy. No Binding. Condición: Collectible-Good. Original black-and-white group portrait photograph taken on the occasion of a staff presentation to Edmond D. Coblentz at the San Francisco Examiner. Mounted on white matboard. About fifty-two sitters are in the photo. The setting is an editorial newsroom. A desk with a typewriter and a bunch of papers on top is in the foreground toward the right. Printed at the bottom of the photo is the title and the following text identifying the photographer: "R. J. Waters & Co., 717 Market St." Matboard: 13 3/4" x 7 3/4." Photo: 12" x 6 1/2." Matboard is very clean and intact except for light age toning and minuscule bumping to corners. Photo is mostly clean and intact but has several wrinkles and chips on the left and right edges. The largest chip measures about 1/2" x 1/2" and affects a small part of the photo. The scratches and wrinkles on the right extend from top to bottom but only affect one of the sitters. A wrinkle on the left affects two of the sitters. The rest of the photo is very clean and unmarked. A Good copy. Edmond David Coblentz (1882-1959) was an American newspaper reporter, editor, and publisher associated with Hearst Newspapers. Coblentz worked for several newspapers owned by William Randolph Hearst. Among the newspapers he worked for were the San Francisco Examiner, the San Francisco Call (later, the San Francisco Call-Bulletin), and the New York American. Notably, Coblentz was an editor for the San Francisco Examiner from 1907-1913 and 1915-1925, the San Francisco Call from 1913-1915, and the New York American from 1927-1934. He also worked as an editorial consultant for Hearst Papers from 1950-1959. Edmond was married to Lolita (nee Heyneman).…

No Binding. Condición: Very Good. Original black-and-white group portrait photograph showing numerous guests at a banquet that was held on May 6, 1909 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, California. Title and photographer's imprint ("R. J. Waters & Co, 717 Market St.") printed in white at bottom of photo. 17 1/2" x 12." Photo is very clean and intact except for light age toning on front, a few chips and bumps along edges (part of top edge of photo is affected), and browning on back. A Very Good copy. This is a fascinating photo that documents a goodwill banquet that took place at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco on May 6, 1909. Most of the guests appear to be American civic or community leaders from San Francisco and a few of the guests are officers, including the admiral, of the Imperial Japanese Navy Training Squadron (referred to as the "Japanese Training Squadron" in the photo's title or caption). The guests are all men who wear formal attire, a white dress shirt and black coat and pants. The guests are seated at long dining tables in the spacious banquet hall. Most of the guests face viewers (and show various facial expressions), but a few appear mid-conversation or are turned away. Food has been served; the foreground appears to show plates of half-eaten mussels or oysters and dinner rolls. Tables are topped with white tablecloths and decorative flowers. Ornate chandeliers dot the ceiling. Notably, there are two decorative flag arrangements on the back wall and wall to the right that each show the diplomatic nature of the occasion; each arrangement incorporates the Japanese flag is to the left and the American flag to the right. In the early 1900s, following Japan's victory in the Russo-Japanese War, it became a biennial tradition for the Imperial Japanese Navy Training Squadron, which was part of the Imperial Training Fleet, to visit the Bay Area as both a gesture of international maritime diplomacy and a way for newly commissioned Japanese navy cadets to gain further training at sea. The diplomacy tours of the Japanese Training Squadron were also a showcase of Japan's military capabilities in the form of the fleet's warships. Bay Area politicians and community leaders welcomed the officers and cadets of the Japanese Training Squadron during these visits. Similar to San Francisco's modern-day Fleet Week, the Japanese Training Squadron's warships opened their decks to the general public for tours and observation. The diplomatic tours also included events of cultural exchange wherein Americans showed the Japanese visitors their customs, and, in turn, the Japanese showcased their customs such as martial arts, kendo (fencing), and sumo wrestling. Banquets, such as the one pictured in this photo, were another diplomatic aspect of the Japanese Training Squadron's visits. It was common for these banquets to be held at upscale historical hotels such as the Fairmont Hotel (as pictured here) and Hotel St. Francis, and they were sometimes hosted by the Japanese American Association. In another form of cultural exchange, the banquets also gave the Japanese guests the opportunity to learn about American cuisine and dining customs. This photo was taken by R. J. Waters & Company, a photography studio that was founded by its namesake, R. J. Waters (1856-1937). Waters was an American commercial photographer who was originally from Sacramento. In 1892, Waters opened R. J. Waters & Company at 110 Sutter Street in San Francisco. R. J. Waters & Co. was active until at least 1917.…

Collection of approximately 393 photographic prints of ships in the San Francisco Harbor, taken at the turn of the twentieth century. Photographs of full rigged sailing ships, clipper ships, whaling barks, tramp steamers, steam trawlers, and a torpedo boat are in the collection, many stamped Waters Company or R.J. Waters & Co., San Francisco. Ships from all around the world are represented including Scotland, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Sweden, and the United States. Many show San Francisco docks, skyline and headlands as the setting, one depicting Alcatraz in the background. In very good condition. The photographs measure approximately 8 inches by 10 inches. Collected in four large folios. R.J. Waters, a lesser-known figure in the realm of early photography, made notable contributions to documenting maritime life and industrial advancements in the late nineteenth century. His collection of photographs captured the transition from sail to steam power, showcasing ships, harbors, and coastal communities with remarkable detail. These images not only served as a visual record of the maritime industry during a transformative era but also highlighted the socio-economic impact of technological progress on seafaring communities. Waters' work bridged art and historical documentation, providing valuable insights into the aesthetics of industrial photography and the role of visual media in preserving maritime heritage. Today, his photographs are regarded as important artifacts for studying the intersection of maritime history, technology, and visual culture.…
