Though Dr Bindeshwar Pathak is referred by different names as Toilet Man of India, World Leader of Sanitation, Sanitation Soldier, Social Entrepreneur, Liberator of Manual Scavengers, Social Reformer, Great Humanist, Thinker, Sociologist, Author, Founder of Sulabh International, Sanitation Santa Claus, Sanitation King and Toilet Guru, the title 'Sanitation Guru' fits him very well. Dr Pathak's pioneering work has revolutionized the concept of sanitation in India. His commitment to work and his core ability as a leader is legendary, resulting in him being referred to as 'Sanitation Guru'. Dr Pathak worked among the untouchables nay human scavengers and to liberate them invented a new toilet technology known as Sulabh toilets which are low-cost, two-pit, pour-flush needing little water and turns waste into a resource. The gas produced can be used for heating, lighting, cooking and electricity generation. By making public toilets 'pay-and-use', he made them self-sustaining. After the manual scavengers were relieved from this subhuman occupation, he also rehabilitated them by giving general and vocational education in different occupations. He also built an English medium school for their children. Basically, Sulabh is a sanitation movement in the entire country. Sanitation contributes to gender equality, access to education and dignity of labour nay dignity of life. Because of his efforts, sociology of sanitation is now taught in 22 universities and several colleges in India.…

Action Sociology. 8. Theoretical Perspectives. 9. Scientific Methods in Action Sociology. 10. Writings of Dr Bindeshwar Pathak. 11. Mahatma Gandhi and Dr Bindeshwar Pathak. 12. Future of Action Sociology. Philosophers, social scientists and sociologists have spoken about action or social action. In Hindu philosophy, the concepts of Karma and Dharma indicate the type of action desired. Social action theory began with the work of Max Weber. Talcott Parson s theory of social action is based on his concept of society. Vilfredo Pareto spoke of non-logical actions. The foremost practitioner of social action was Mahatma Gandhi and in Dr Bindeshwar Pathak, we have an action sociologist who is also an expert in theoretical sociology. Action sociology is the core of Dr Bindeshwar Pathak s philosophy. The book presents Dr Pathak s concept of Action Sociology and gives a glimpse of his actions. His idea of Action Sociology is much wider and goes far beyond the limits of Applied Sociology and Sociology in Action . It aims at sociologist s intervention to shape the process of social change. While discussing the concept of Social Action, the book also takes into account the actions initiated by Dr Pathak in the realm of sanitation, liberation of scavengers, education, upliftment of the widows, inter-caste marriages etc. The book also gives the theoretical perspectives and scientific methods in Action Sociology. After examining the writings of Dr Pathak, the book compares the views of Dr Pathak with that of Mahatma Gandhi in the area of sanitation, non-violence, caste system, removal of untouchability, status of women etc.…

Understanding social movements is a complex process. Social movements are more or less persistent, organized effort on the part of a relatively large number of people to bring about or resist social change. They are best understood through different theories such as Functionalism, Marxism, Theory of Collective Action, Relative Deprivation Theory, Strain Theory, Resource Mobilization Theory and New Social Movement Theories. Further understanding of social movements is done through the study of the type of movements. Sociologists and social scientists have studied social movements as revolutionary, reform, reactionary and religious movements. Different movements have different causes and outcomes. But all movements generally go through a life cycle marked by the progressive stages of emergence, coalescence, bureaucratization, and decline. India has seen many movements right from Buddhism and Jainism which can be considered reform movements. At the beginning of last century there was freedom movement followed by a series of environmental movements after independence like Save Silent Valley movement, Chipko movement, Narmada Bachao Andolan and lately Nirbhaya movement and MeToo movement. First section of this volume is devoted to the conceptual and theoretical understanding of social movements. Contributions in this volume are further categorized into five Indian social movements Tribal, Dalit, Backward Classes, Environmental and Women s movements. The book will be useful for students, researchers, teachers, administrators and planners. …
