In… dieser Zeitspanne, eingerahmt von der Zarenherrschaft Peters I. und Katharinas II., vollzog sich durch die Übernahme des zunächst dichotomischen Konzepts von Zivilisiertheit und Barbarei aus dem 'westlichen Europa ein tiefgreifender Wandel tradierter Denkweisen und Praktiken der russländischen Elite, der erst jetzt in der Herausbildung eines umfassenden imperialen Bewusstseins resultierte. Dabei wird gezeigt, dass von einem exklusiven 'Sonderweg' des Zarenreiches im 18. Jahrhundert keine Rede sein kann. Vielmehr offenbaren Diskurse und Praktiken der Zivilisierung, Akkulturierung und Assimilierung zahlreiche Parallelen zu Denkweisen und zum Verhalten anderer europäischer Kolonialreiche. Als russländische Spezifika wird der frühe Ursprung der russländischen Assimilationsidee herausgearbeitet, deren verhältnismäßig späte Koppelung an eine russländische Zivilisierungsabsicht und die Gründe, warum trotz des Wandels von Konzepten und Praktiken das ganze 18.
