Campbell also founded the first school for the blind on Taiwan and introduced the Braille system to the island. The present volume offers 50 vignettes of his work, travels and adventures on Taiwan. A high quality reprint of the 1915 first edition, differing only from the original in that all plates are together at the beginning of the book, as opposed to their scattering throughout the pages of the original edition. 394 pp., 15 full page b&w plates. Four pages, 12mo. Very good on lightly aged paper. She apologises for only sending 'two words of Sir Joshua Reynolds' writing', and hopes she may some day 'succeed in getting a more valuable autograph'. It was given to her 'by a great niece' of the artist, 'and was cut out of a manuscript of some work on Engravings, which he had… prepared for the press'. They are glad to hear of Tuckwell's 1878 'appointment to the living of Stockton': 'I trust many years of rest and happiness are in store for you in that quiet retreat'. Tuckwell, the self-styled 'radical parson' (see his entry in the New DNB), divided up the glebe land at Stockton into allotments for poor parishioners.

Part 1 is composed from the Oud en Niew Oost-Indian by Fran¿ois Valentyn and covers topography, trade and religion. Part 2 covers Catholic Missions to the Island and sheds some light on the issues they faced related to having no vernacular Bibles and other methods of conversion. This will be of particular interest to students and researchers of Catholic world conversion efforts under the Counter-Reformation, in comparison to similar efforts elsewhere in Asia such as Japan, China and India. Part 3 narrates the events which led up to, and culminated in, the nine months' siege of Fort Zeelandia which ended the rule of the Dutch East India Company over what is now Taiwan.
