Refregier writes to progressive educator Harold Rugg about a proposed visit to Columbia University to talk about his work: "I am planning to bring along color slides of my easle [sic] paintings and murals and a 16 mm film of the San Francisco murals. Naturally, I would like to share my experiences, such as the work in architecture, and, perhaps, there could be some possibility of arranging an informal evening at the University or some other place." He also writes about his interest in Puerto Rican art and his plan to visit Puerto Rico. Anton Refregier [1905-1979] was a painter and muralist active in Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project commissions and in teaching art. He was a Russian immigrant to the United States. It depicts the history of the state across twenty-seven panels. One of the best-known educators during the Progressive era of education, Harold Rugg (1886-1960) was a professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University. A Civil Engineer, he had become interested in how students learn and pursued a doctorate in education. He was responsible for producing the very first series of school textbooks from 1929 until the 1940s.
