Añadir al carritohardcover, dust jacket. Reed, Ethel Ilustrador. 6 x 9 inches. hardcover, dust jacket. 160 pages. "The author, William Peterson, Professor Emeritus of English, University of Maryland, is to be commended for seeing this through. It is not easy to gather facts about lives of women. He has packed a lot of information in this 123 page book and it is well worth reading." - Barbara Adams Hebard, Guild of Bookworkers Newsletter, No. 222, October 2015 Ethel Reed (1874-1912) is one of the most elusive figures in the history of American graphic design. Born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, she moved in the 1890s to Boston, where, while still in her early twenties, she achieved international recognition for her posters - and for her personal glamour. "The beautiful poster lady" is how newspapers of the day described her, and they often went on to claim that she was the most famous woman artist in America. Ethel Reed was an extraordinarily vivid personality of the fin de siècle and a striking early example of a media celebrity. But in 1896, following a broken engagement, she sailed to Europe, contributed to the two final issues of the Yellow Book in London, and then, after the turn of the century, vanished in the fog (to use her own phrase). Now William S. Peterson, through meticulous archival research, has at last been able to reconstruct the story of her life in England. Though unsuccessful in renewing her artistic career, she found lovers there, bore two children, and eventually married Arthur Warwick, an English army officer. Yet the marriage fell apart immediately, and her final years were darkened by poverty, drug addiction, and alcoholism. This is the only book-length treatment of her work as a designer - and the first successful attempt to recover Ethel Reed's enigmatic, hidden life. It includes 16 color plates of her posters and 47 black-and-white illustrations. William S. Peterson (Professor Emeritus of English, University of Maryland), a bibliographer and book historian, has edited three scholarly journals and has written or edited sixteen books, the most recent of which is (in collaboration with Sylvia Holton Peterson) The Kelmscott Chaucer: A Census (Oak Knoll Press, 2011). One of his books was nominated for a National Book Award, and another was the winner of the 1993 Felice Feliciano Award. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow and a Visiting Fellow at Exeter College, Oxford.

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. This small, scarce booklet on American novelist Myrtle Reed is made up of two separate essays : "Myrtle Reed as Her Friends Know Her" by Ethel S. Colon; and "Why Myrtle Reed's Books are Popular" by Norma Bright Carson. There is no doubt the novels of Reed were popular - you may remember seeing the lovely gold, pale green, pink, and cream floral decorations against cover background in lavender, pale blue, buff, etc. Many of those bindings were designed by the famous book designer, Margaret Armstrong, making the books pop out from the general dull looking covers of other books. Laid within the booklet is a letter, written in cursive on the personal stationery of Mrs. Arthur J. Simpson, to a person un-named, about San Antonio society. The letter starts : " Though there is a large part of this book which is of local interest only, I think it does represent a picture of a phase of Texas life which is not known generally outside of this section, a manner of living transferred directly from the 'Old South?, etc? The letter continues onto a second sheet. It is penned in ink, but it is not signed. It is not absolutely clear that the book mentioned in the letter is the one offered here. There is a note from the publisher, on the recto of the rear cover : "These Papers are reprinted with the permission of the 'Book News Monthly', in which they came into publication in January 1911. Since the monograph was put into type, the work and the life of Myrtle Reed have come to a close. It has been thought best, however, to make no change in the text of the essays as originally printed. The words of discriminating appreciation given at the time to the writings of Myrtle Reed and to the character of their author are as true and as pertinent as when first Written." - G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York, August 25, 1911. TITLE : Myrtle Reed as Her Friends Know Her & Why Myrtle Reed's Books are Popular AUTHORS : Ethel S. Colon & Norma Bright Carson IMPRINT : G.P. Putnam's Sons PLACE : New York DATE : (August 1911) EDITION : First Edition STATUS : OP -- Scarce DETAILS : Small booklet. Contains a Frontispiece portrait of Myrtle Reed by F. Soule Campbell, and 11 small pictorial vignettes which merge with the text, printed in olive green. 16 pages; 4 7/8" x 7 3/8"; stapled wraps - the front cover has an oval hole in the middle through which the frontispiece portrait of Reed is visible. The text is printed on calendered paper. The final page presents a list of Reed's books. The inside of the rear cover has the Publisher's Note. SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES : Folded and laid with in the book is a two page letter, penned in ink, written on the stationery of Mrs. Arthur J. Simpson. I am assuming the hand that wrote the letter was hers. The letter discusses some interesting things about San Antonio, Texas. The letter consists of two sheets measuring 6" x 6 7/8", with letterhead at top; her cursive hand is penned in blue ink. CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive, with the following noted :: EXTERIOR -- Slight weathering along spine; a small stain displays almost an inch from the foot of the front fore-edge, else clean and clear of marking. BINDING -- Still tight INTERIOR -- Clean and free of marking. LETTER -- Folded once, as found. In excellent condition. No envelope.

Set against the backdrop of World War I, it transports Santa Claus to the front lines, leaving his wife to navigate the complexities of gift-giving in an unfamiliar world. The author masterfully weaves together historical events, such as the Liberty Loan drives and the sacrifices made by soldiers, with the timeless magic of Christmas. Through the eyes of a diverse cast of characters, the book explores the themes of patriotism, sacrifice, and the true meaning of giving. From the ambitious Colonel to the loyal Barkis, from the selfless Red Cross Nurse to the steadfast Mrs. Ruggles, each character's perspective illuminates the impact of war on individuals and communities. As they navigate the challenges of the holiday season, their interactions reveal the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of hope. This thought-provoking book offers a fresh and poignant perspective on the Christmas spirit, inviting readers to reflect on the significance of the season and its relevance to the broader human experience. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
