LOWANCE, MASON I. / WESTBROOK, ELLEN E. / DE PROSPO, R. C. The Stowe debate: rhetorical strategies in Uncle Tom's cabin. Edited by Mason I. Lowance, Jr., Ellen E. Westbrook, R.C. De Prospo. Amherst: University of Massachusetts Press, 1994, vi, 318pp., . "This collection of essays addresses the continuing controversy surrounding Uncle Tom's Cabin. On publication in 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel sparked a national debate about the nature of slavery and the character of those who embraced it. Since then, critics have used the book to illuminate a host of issues dealing with race, gender, politics, and religion in antebellum America. They have also argued about Stowe's rhetorical strategies and the literary conventions she appropriated to give her book such unique force." "The thirteen contributors to this volume enter these debates from a variety of critical perspectives. They address questions of language and ideology, the tradition of the sentimental novel, biblical influences, and the rhetoric of antislavery discourse. As much as they disagree on various points, they share a keen interest in the cultural work that texts can do and an appreciation of the enduring power of Uncle Tom's Cabin." - CONTENTS: "Magic of the Real Presence of Distress" : sentimentality and competing rhetorics of authority / Catharine E. O'Connell -- Flirting with patriarchy : feminist dialogics / Melanie J. Kisthardt -- Rhetoric and satire / Jan Pilditch -- Pliable rhetoric of domesticity / S. Bradley Shaw -- Sentimentality and the uses of death / Isabelle White -- Matriarchy and the rhetoric of domesticity / Susan L. Roberson -- Confronting Antichrist : the influence of Jonathan Edwards's millennial Vision / Helen Petter Westra -- Biblical typology and the allegorical mode : the prophetic strain / Mason I. Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Poe's Difference argues that Edgar Allan Poe has much more in common with early American, medieval, and ancient writers than with the modern and post-modern ones with whom the writer is so often associated. This book emphasizes Poe's anachronisms to make a number of theoretical, pedagogical, literary historical, and political claims about the backwardness of antebellum U.S. culture. Some time ago Michael Colacurcio issued the challenge that 'the full case for the Puritan character of Poe's 'horror' remains to be made.' Although going back a good deal further than just to the 'Puritans,' Poe's Difference aspires fully to make precisely this case.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. The Latest Early American Literature, according to readers for the University of Delaware Press, is a collection of polemics and manifestoes. In it R. C. De Prospo bids to follow in the footsteps of the two, rare, early Americanist dissenters whom Philip F. Gura once distinguished as prophets without honor in the field: William Spengemann and Michael Colacurcio. The book contends that a supposedly retired nationalist/modernist telos continues to reign in most of the latest scholarship, and even more influentially in all of the current literary histories and anthologies, no matter how expansive in gender, ethnic, racial, and hemispheric inclusiveness they profess to be. Old teloi, in particular that old American exceptionalist one, can be cunning.Updating and expanding upon essays written over the past thirty years, De Prospo proposes not only negatively to critique how the latest scholarly receptions of early American literature differ insignificantly from the earlier ones, but positively to propose how a transnationalist concessionthat as a neocolonial culture Americas lags behind that of Europemight advance post-modern historiography by radically repositioning the past as no longer the presents diachronic predecessor but, to quote Lyotards semiotics, its synchronic differend. Closer to earth, De Prospo tries at the same time to remain mindful of the pedagogical imperative that ultimately to save the texts of early American literature will require making them legible to average non-specialist, never-to-become specialist undergraduate general education students. To facilitate this he introduces in the concluding section of The Latest Early American Literature what will probably be taken as its most radical intervention: the redefinition of Edgar Allan Poe as an early American writer. The Latest Early American Literature both negatively critiques how the latest scholarly receptions of early American literature differ insignificantly from the earliest ones and positively proposes how a transnationalist concessionthat Americas neocolonial culture lags behind that of Europemight advance postmodern theorizing.
