Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Document from the year 2020 in the subject Theology - Biblical Theology, Namibia Evangelical Theological Seminary, language: English, abstract: Money can be a hot topic in Christian churches and the Namibian church is no exception to that. While many traditional mainline denominations struggle to raise the funds they need for their various ministries, prosperity type churches and Pentecostal church bodies seem to flourish financially in Namibia. Some people are quick to point out that the main reason for this phenomenon lies in the churches' differing attitude towards the concept of tithing. While tithing plays a central role in Pentecostal and prosperity churches, most Protestant denominations rely on other ways of funding. In his paper, Thorsten Prill gives a critical overview of the various methods Namibian churches use to raise funds. These methods include collections, membership fees, fundraising events, commercial activities and investment trusts as well as encouraging members to give a tenth of the income to the church. In a second paper, Johann van Wyk examines the concept of tithing from a biblical perspective. He demonstrates that New Testament teachings do not support the claim that Christians are obliged to tithe. There are, however, a number of helpful biblical principles of giving which Namibian churches should apply. Most importantly, van Wyk argues, that giving in Namibian churches needs to become a matter of the heart; giving must be driven by love and grace.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Document from the year 2021 in the subject Theology - Biblical Theology, Namibia Evangelical Theological Seminary, language: English, abstract: While some scholars reject the notion that the evangelist Mark portrays Jesus as the Suffering Servant of Isaiah, Misseline Gordon, who lectures at Namibia Evangelical Theological Seminary, holds that this is exactly what he does. Having convincingly argued her case, she demonstrates that the concept of the Suffering Servant provides a helpful model for both Christian discipleship and leadership. If Christian discipleship means following Jesus and the goal of leadership is to help Christians to do so, disciples of Jesus will need to embrace the biblical message that sacrifice, suffering and service to others constitute essential elements of the Christian life. In a country like Namibia, such an understanding challenges not only cultural conventions and theological views but also church practices and leadership patterns.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject Theology - Biblical Theology, grade: 'keine', , language: English, abstract: In 2008 many people in Africa and elsewhere were shocked when they saw on their televisions how Zimbabwean, Mozambican and Malawian immigrants were attacked, robbed and beaten up in South African townships. This eruption of xenophobic violence against millions of fellow Southern Africans was unheard of. Some authors have claimed that stereotyping and vilifying language in the Bible contributed to these xenophobic attacks. In this research paper Thorsten Prill shows that the biblical teaching actually rejects racism and promotes acceptance beyond ethnic and social boundaries. The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of what the Bible has to say about migrants and strangers and to encourage Christians to live accordingly and to promote the biblical view in their local communities and beyond. Dr Thorsten Prill lectures in missiology, systematic theology and practical theology at Namibia Evangelical Theological Seminary (NETS), Windhoek. He is the author of two books, German Protestantism and the Spirit of God (2010) and Global Mission on our Doorstep (2008). He has also edited several other books, including Mission Namibia (2012) and God's Mission in Southern Africa (2011). He serves as an Associate Pastor at Inner-City Lutheran Congregation, Windhoek.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Document from the year 2021 in the subject Theology - Practical Theology, Namibia Evangelical Theological Seminary, language: English, abstract: Like in most parts of Namibia, Christianity plays a major role in the Rehoboth community. The goal of Christian ethics in any community is to glorify God. Many people in Rehoboth would agree with that statement, in principle. However, as Heinz Mouton's research shows, Pentecostal and mainline Protestant preachers in Rehoboth offer little-to-no ethical application of key passages, such as Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. Mouton argues that this, in part, explains why the lifestyles of many Rehoboth Christians differ significantly from the ethical values of God's Kingdom recorded in the New Testament. His plea to the Rehoboth church, therefore, is for stronger teaching and preaching that emphasises the ethics of Christ's Kingdom, and how they touch all aspects of human relationships: from the workplace, to the neighbourhood, to the family home.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Document from the year 2017 in the subject Theology - Biblical Theology, Namibia Evangelical Theological Seminary, language: English, abstract: There are many reasons why leaders, whether lay or ordained, are selected by African churches. Many Namibian church leaders tend to be appointed based on elements of both ascribed and achieved status, such as family origin, tribal background, gender, political affiliation, education or the roles they play in the business world or local government. By analysing the two lists of leadership qualifications for elders and overseers in the Pastoral Epistles (Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9) Christa Biwa demonstrates that such particularism is faulty. The criteria that mattered most to the apostle Paul and the early church were character and spiritual maturity. Church leaders, Paul¿s lists show, need to be people of integrity. As such they are patient, gracious and quick to forgive. They do not fall into the trap of materialism and never look for a fight. As people of integrity church leaders listen to the advice of others and treat the members of their churches with respect. The social status of their fellow believers does not influence their decisions. They can control themselves and love whatever is good. These are just some of the character traits Christa Biwa identifies, and which church leaders need to possess or strive for. Where these traits are missing, Biwa claims, the ramifications are many and widespread. Ethical misconduct by church leaders usually has an impact not only on individuals and their families but also on the local congregation, the wider church and the leaders¿ spouses and children. Therefore, like the apostle Paul and the early church, Christa Biwa argues, Namibian churches need to take the selection of their pastors, elders and bishops seriously. Paul¿s lists of leadership qualifications can help them to identify and appoint godly leaders. Character testing needs to be not only at the heart of any selection process but also a regular and ongoing element of leadership development.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Document from the year 2019 in the subject Theology - Historic Theology, Ecclesiastical History, Namibia Evangelical Theological Seminary, language: English, abstract: The Protestant missionary movements have for some time come under severe criticism. Writing from a Namibian perspective, Brendell and Prill demonstrate that the overall picture painted by the critics is often harsh. Most Protestant missionaries were driven by compassion for people who needed to hear the Christian Gospel. Of course, that does not mean that they were faultless. Their zeal for the mission of the Church did not prevent missionaries from making serious mistakes. One of these mistakes was the practice of paternalism, as the example of the Rhenish Missionary Society shows.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - For a long time, African mission history has been equated with the history of Western missionaries on the African continent. However, Christian mission in Africa was never an exclusively Western enterprise. On the contrary, as Blessing Chishanu and Thorsten Prill in their articles on African Initiated Churches and African pioneer missionaries show, African Christians made significant contributions to the growth of the African church. That Western missionaries even hindered that kind of growth at times is demonstrated by Anthony Brendell who compares the approaches of two European mission societies. While the Finnish Missionary Society that worked among the Ovambo people in the north of Namibia fostered indigenous church leadership, the majority of Rhenish missionaries from Germany struggled to transfer the work to Herero, Nama and Baster Christians in the central and southern parts of the country. The same kind of ambivalence can be seen in the treatment of African women by Western Protestant missionaries in Southern Africa. Thorsten Prill shows that the role missionaries played as catalysts for the liberation of African women was rather complex. Some missionaries played their part in the subordination of women. Others, however, promoted gender equality by providing refuge, education and opportunities for African women to become decision-makers and agents of change. In his final article, Thorsten Prill identifies both the lack of cross-cultural training and first-hand cross-cultural experience as the main reasons for the mistakes many Protestant missionaries made in Africa in the second half of the 19th century. Because of their deficiencies in cultural intelligence missionaries underestimated cultural barriers which resulted in misunderstanding and miscommunication between them and the indigenous African population.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Document from the year 2015 in the subject Theology - Miscellaneous, , language: English, abstract: There are an increasing number of missionaries and church leaders in Africa and Europe whose views of the gospel and the principle of submission are not very clear. Some views of the gospel are obviously shaped by postmodernism, feminism or liberation theology; and while some church and mission leaders understand submission in authoritarian terms others favour a laissez-faire approach. These different views and attitudes, however, raise some important questions: How can missionaries work together in a team or cooperate with indigenous churches if they do not agree on the nature of the gospel What motivates missionaries for ministry if it is not the Good News as we can find it in the Bible How can missionaries serve on the mission field if they hold to or are confronted with an unbiblical view of submission The first part of this book examines several false versions of the gospel which Christians encounter on the mission field in Africa and elsewhere today. Furthermore, it looks at the difference the biblical gospel makes in our lives and calls us back to the cross of Christ as our only hope. The second part of this book examines the complex issues of submission, authority and accountability in the various relationships that exist whenever a missionary goes out to serve God and His Church. Some of the most vivid contemporary problems are addressed from a biblical perspective. It is my hope that everyone, from sending church, mission organisation, receiving church and missionaries themselves will find this book an important read to clarify the issues and be better prepared to serve in cross-cultural mission.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Document from the year 2017 in the subject Theology - Miscellaneous, Namibia Evangelical Theological Seminary, language: English, abstract: On the 31st October 1517 Martin Luther published his Ninety-Five Theses in which he criticised the sale of indulgences by the Roman Catholic Church. This date is considered the beginning of the Reformation. While the Protestant Reformers are widely praised for the rediscovery of the biblical gospel, they have come under fire regarding their views on mission. There are church historians and missiologists who argue that the Protestant Reformers were not interested in mission and, in fact, ignored the mission mandate which Christ had given to his Church. However, a closer study of Luther, Calvin, Bucer, and Melanchthon, shows that the critics miss both the Reformers' commitment to practical mission work and their missiological contributions. The critics seem to overlook the fact that cities, such as Geneva and Wittenberg, in which the Reformers lived, studied and taught, served as hubs of a huge missionary enterprise. Thousands of preachers went out from these centres of the Reformation to spread the gospel all over Europe. Leading Scandinavian theologians, such as Mikael Agricola, Olaus Petri, or Hans Tausen, had all studied under Luther and Melanchthon in Wittenberg before they began their reform work in their home countries.Furthermore, with their re-discovery of the gospel of justification by faith alone, their emphasis on the personal character of faith in Christ, their radical re-interpretation of the priesthood, their recognition of God's authorship of mission, their reminder that the witness to the gospel takes place in the midst of a spiritual battle, and their insistence that the Bible has to be available in common languages, the Protestant Reformers laid down important principles for the mission work of the church which are still valid today.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Document from the year 2025 in the subject Theology - Practical Theology, Namibia Evangelical Theological Seminary, language: English, abstract: Helmuth Garoëb, a Namibian missionary working in Finland, examines the phenomenon of African reverse mission in his host country that historically sent missionaries to his southern African homeland. Comparing the ministry of African Christians in Finland with African mission work in the United Kingdom, Garoëb identifies several parallels but also some significant differences. There are aspects of Finnish culture and living conditions that present unique challenges to African Christians who engage in evangelism and church planting. However, there are also many opportunities for them to reach out to both expatriate and indigenous communities in the land of sisu. Whether their still relatively small numbers will have a lasting impact on the Finnish church remains to be seen.
