Unpaged - 129 single-sided leaves (printing on rectos only - title leaf followed by one stanza per recto). Hardcover: H 12cm x L 19.75cm. No dust jacket present (unknown as to whether one was issued but, as a privately printed book, probably not). Dark blue cloth rubbed; scuffing/fraying and bumping to spine ends and board corners; some flaking/dulling to spine's gilt lettering but all still easily legible; small discolored patch at rear board's bottom center. Some toning to initial and rear leaves with scattered minor soiling and a few small stains; top fore-edge corner of last leaf creased. Slender tearing to surface paper at rear hinge but binding remains firm. Still a very good copy. Printed without any preliminary or terminal blank leaves - i.e. the title page is immediately opposite the front pastedown and final stanza leaf has its blank verso opposite the rear pastedown - which adds an additional purposeful structural element to John Barton Wolgamot's enigmatic 128 stanza prose poem where each stanza repeats the same basic sentence but with altered adverbs and names/name-groupings. Wolgamot's work remained obscure for three decades until poet Keith Waldrop (1932-2023) introduced the book to composer Robert Ashley (1930-2014) who felt the stanzaic cadence and meter suggested fugal and sonatical forms and collaborated with musician-artist Paul DeMarinis to unify the poetry with synthesizer and electronic mixing. Released in January 1973 under Wolgamot's same convoluted title, the Ashley and DeMarinis song was lauded as innovative avant-garde experimental music and raised attention to the book which too is now seen by some as a high point in twentieth century American experimental literature. Ashley's album notes mention that this book was the second in a Wolgamot trilogy - preceded by "In Sara Haardt Were Men and Women" (published circa 1941 but OCLC cites 1943; OCLC locates copies at eight institutions) and followed by "Beacons of Ancestorship, A Symphonic Study of the Rejuvenation in the Grain" (never published). Evidently the three were to share matching pagination and sentence/stanza structure but differ in appellative choices and contrasting adverbs. According to Waldrop, the quixotic Wolgamot revealed that he had destroyed both editions of "In Sara" and that there could not be more than a couple dozen surviving copies. Although unmarked as such this copy was acquired from the estate of Selma, Alabama bibliophilic physician Dr. Joseph Hagood, Jr. (1937-2021) who keenly enjoyed modern American poetry/literature, H.L. Mencken, and Alabamiana, all of which intersect with this tome as Wolgamot's titular muse was Mencken's wife Montgomery, Alabama-born Sara Powell Haardt.
