Pollini took a hiatus after this very difficult season as a result of a bad back and reported problems with his precious fingers, and did not return to active concertizing until 2006. He returned with a bang, and won the Grammy Award for his recording of the Chopin Nocturnes in 2007. Maurizio Pollini died on March 23, 2024 at the age of 82, after a long illness. Those of us fortunate enough to have seen him in person, performing regularly at CSO, remember, unforgettable musical memories aside, someone extremely shy, and as inside gossip went, a lifelong and inveterate smoker. An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item for Maurizio Pollini collectors.
