12mo, 2 pp, 13 lines. Good, on lightly aged paper. He is sending his reply (not present) to an article by André Beaumier 'qui me concerne (Figaro du 11 mars)'. The question of university reform is important and 'à l'ordre du jour', consequently he asks his correspondent to make use of his reply. Fouillee was, according to J. A.…Scott, 'the founder of French solidarist philosophy'. Loosely inserted in blue paper folder with catalogue entry for the previous sale of the item laid down on front.

8vo. 1 p. To the lawyer Anatole Catusse, declining an invitation to dinner because of his earlier acceptance of an invitation to attend the "inauguration dinner of the Musée social". The letter can be dated with respect to the dinner that took place on Monday 25 March 1895. As Izoulet mentions, the Musée Social was funded by cou…nt Aldebert de Chambrun. - In the second part of the letter, Izoulet expresses his regret that Madame Marie-Maguerite Catusse couldn't attend a Latin thesis defense ceremony at the Sorbonne earlier that year because the "hall was full" when she arrived. - Marie-Maguerite Catusse (1858-1928) was one of the closest friends of Marcel Proust's mother Jeanne Weil and a friend and longtime correspondent of Marcel Proust. - The Musée social was founded to preserve documents from the Social Economy pavilion of the 1899 Exposition Universelle. Over the years, the well-funded institution became an important center of research into a broad range of topics, including social housing, labor organization, and city planning. Based on its expertise and important supporters and members, the Musée social gained great influence over government policy in the 1st half of the 20th century. - With a tear to a fold slightly affecting the text.

8vo (100 x 150 mm). 4 pp. on bifolium. A heartfelt wartime letter in which the sociologist expresses his concern for his sons in the army and discusses his role in countering German propaganda. Sent to an unnamed friend, the clearly shaken Lévy-Bruhl gives his correspondent news about the movements and activities of his sons, be…fore moving on to his own part in the war effort, which he finds a source of moral support in trying times. - With the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Alliance Française, Lévy-Bruhl was part of a counter-propaganda initiative to ensure that people at home and abroad had accurate and current information about France: "Depuis bientôt trois mois, j'ai la satisfaction d'être entièrement occupé, avec quelques amis, à combatter la propaganda allemande [.] nous avons aussi des éditions en espagnol, portugais, danois, hollandais, suédois, et néanmoins en allemand (pour la Suisse). Nous avons à 30,000 en français et à 40,000 en langues étrangères; ce chiffre sera sûrement dépassé, car nous recevons beaucoup de demandes. Nous agissons, bien enténdu, de concert avec les affaires étrangères et avec leur appui; et nous avons le sentiment que cette forme d'action vient pas inutile. Cela nous soutient". - Lucien Lévy-Bruhl was Professor of the History of Modern Philosophy at La Sorbonne from 1908, a pioneering sociologist and an associate of Marcel Mauss and Émile Durkheim, by whom he was greatly influenced. He was also a committed socialist and a cousin by marriage of Alfred Dreyfus, whose cause he supported. Here we have a private insight into the thinker as a worried father and a man seeking to do his bit for his country and the world in a dark time. - Extremely light browning to edges. Crisp and clean, writing clear and legible.

Large 4to. Altogether (1+1+1¼+1½=) 4¾ pp. on 6 ff. With 1 typed envelope. In German, comprehensive letters to Martin Lutschewitz, about Adorno's fierce discussions with representatives of the musical 1950s youth movement. Adorno was accused of being too unfamiliar with the musical youth to be qualified to pronounce on it, and hi…s "Dissonances" were a product of this debate. Here, he writes, in part: "The current situation in particular made your letter so especially meaningful to me, as my controversy with the so-called musical youth movement and the endlessly unfair behaviour of such people as Twittenhoff, Borries, and Wiora (as opposed to Doflein, with whom I conduct a constant and fruitful correspondence) has forced me into extremely pointed wording. The discussion is about a fairly large piece, 'Critique of the Musicians', which will be broadcast in the Stuttgart evening programme on May 25 and again on June 1 [.]" (12 May 1956). - Each on headed paper; published in: s. b. - Full English translations available upon request. - Cf. Sigrid Abel-Struth, "Zur 'Dissonanzen'-Diskussion", in: Musica III (1986), pp. 217-221.
