Vor dem Hintergrund verbindender wie trennender naturräumlicher Faktoren vollzieht sich der kulturelle Wandel und kann über einen Zeitraum von mehr als 5000 Jahre verfolgt werden. Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes beleuchten dies von den unterschiedlichsten Blickwinkeln und den Methoden verschiedener Disziplinen. Beginnend mit den jüngsten Ergebnissen zur Zuzugsgeschichte des Niltals werden soziologische Ansätze, archäologische Berichte aus aktuellen Ausgrabungen und philologische Einzelstudien zu Personengruppen und Zeitepochen bis in das 15. Jh. hinein ausgeführt. Die Beiträge geben so einen Eindruck von den Möglichkeiten, die diese Region für eine moderne, epochenübergreifende Kulturgeschichte bietet. Sie gehen auf ein Internationales Symposium im September 2007 in Berlin zurück und wurden für die vorliegende Veröffentlichung aktualisiert.

Nachdem daraufhin das Deutsche Archäologische Institut in Kairo den Antrag gestellt hatte, die Fatimidische Nekropole wissenschaftlich zu dokumentieren, nahm im Herbst 2006 ein Team von Forscherinnen und Forschern im Rahmen eines Gemeinschaftsprojekts des DAI Kairos zusammen mit Experten des Fachgebiets Bau- und Stadtbaugeschichte der Technischen Universität Berlin sowie Spezialisten des ägyptischen Supreme Council of Antiquities die Arbeit auf. 2014, nach Abschluss der Felduntersuchungen und der Restaurierung einiger Mausoleen, wurde ein Besucherpfad durch die Nekropole angelegt, feierlich eingeweiht und der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. In dem von Philipp Speiser und Giorgio Nogara herausgegebenen Band werden geomorphologische, historische, archäologische, architektonische, denkmalpflegerische und ethnologische Aspekte von einem interdisziplinären Team analysiert und mit detaillierten Geländekarten sowie der zeichnerischen und fotografischen Dokumentation der vorgenommenen Restaurationsarbeiten an ausgewählten Mausoleen und Gräbern präsentiert. Das Buch ist ein wichtiger Beitrag zur Erläuterung frühislamischer Friedhofskultur und -architektur und beleuchtet deren Bedeutung bis in die heutige Zeit.
