During and before World War II, he was an activist for Ukrainian independence. Imprisoned in Auschwitz by the Nazis, after the war he emigrated to United States. He would also be the first bibliographer of Stefan Bandera. He was imprisoned in Auschwitz and several other concentration camps and later spent time at a DP camp, before immigrating to the US, where he wrote several books on OUN and UPA.

The work relates to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), a nationalist paramilitary and partisan force established by the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists on October 14, 1942. During the Second World War, the UPA engaged in guerrilla warfare not only against the Soviet Union but also against Nazi Germany, the Polish Underground State, and later Communist Poland.
