From a publisher's blurb comes "In his more than 200 letters to editors, Colenso wrote mostly for local Hawke's Bay readers. But he was a national celebrity for his opinions, as the clippings from papers outside the Bay scattered through this collection and his widely published obituary notices demonstrate. Said to be the first history setting out the origins and development of the North Island inland city of Palmerston North, this publication was also an early work by this historian. While the first European settlers arrived in the district in the early 1840s, the author presents a summary of the area in its pre-European days. He then records the development of the distrct through milling, agriculture, the establishment of the fledgling town, which received borough status in 1877, taking the story through to the mid-1880s, covering the development of facilities, commerce and industry, transport, amenities and community activities. Now quite scarce. First edition of 1952, 102 pages, folded colour photo frontis, 18 b/w plates, mainly photos, some art and including two fold-out photos (five and four folds respectively). Grey stiff card covers with black front titles are VG+, ditto the text block, no instriptions. Pictorial DJ, with a short tear and few chips top edges and front flap fold, is VG.
