Dust-jacket protected in archival mylar cover. ; 345, [3 (blank)] pages + 22 illustrations (1 double page) on 8 plate leaves. Frontispiece within the pagination. 3 full page maps within the pagination. Pale grey-green cloth boards with red lettering on spine. Page dimensions: 215 x 135mm. Biography, New Zealand, 19th century. "The story of Gilber Mair, who arrived at the Bay of Islands in 1824, and of his sons Robert Mair, Major William Gilbert Mair, and Captain Gilbert Mair N.Z.C., is told against an historical background extending over a century, and embraces the fascinating tale of the conquest and settlement by the Pakeha of the North Island. There can hardly be a parallel to the role played by the members of this remarkable family. The old blustering days when whaler and missionary, Maori and trader met on Kororareka Beach come to life in the story of Gilbert Mair the trader; the turbulent origins of Whangarei in that of Robert Mair the settler; while the whole sorry tale of the Waikato War with its heroic episodes of Rangiriri, Rangiaowhia, and Orakau, and a score of other clashes between Maori and Pakeha is told from the notes and diares of Major William Gilbert Mair." - from dust-jacket blurb. Contents: Foreword; The Coming of Gilbert Mair; Robert Mair's Recollections of the Bay of Islands; Caroline Mair's Memories; Early Days at Whangarei; Henry Abbott Mair - The Wanderer; Major William Gilbert Mair; Brothers in Arms; Te Kooti; The Forest Campaign; The Maori King; A Judge of the Native Land Court; The Experiences of a Guide; The Tarawera Eruption; A Samoan Episode; Days of Peace; The Passing of a Rangatira; Appendices; Index.
