When Carterton planned to celebrate its cenennial in 1957 the noted and respected historian for the lower area on the North Island , Arthur Bagnall, was probably the automatic choice as editor/author of the town's history, having several similar regional publications to his name. The result was a compact, but comprehensive, account to the town's first century with initial suveys in the area being carreid out in the mid-1840s, but organised settlement was delayed by negotatiions with Maori residents reluctant to sell the land, however, this was settled after the Governor. Sir George Grey, personally interceeded. Bagnall's study follows from that point the development of the township, the establishment of farming in the surrounding area, with sawmilling being a major industry for many years -- seven mills operating in the district by 1878. As with many NZ rural areas, Carterton experienced its share of economic ups and downs, destructive fires in the town area with a particularly serious outbreak in 1872, difficulties in establishing civic amenitiesa such as roading, which saw the setting up of a number of roads boards, leading eventually to the desicion to declare Carterton as a borough taken in 1886, with formal status obtained the following year, Bagnall's Carterton history provides a convincing word portrait the typical problems of growth and progress for pioneer rural communities throughout NZ, with every aspect of early settlement expertly examined.
