"Die letzte deutschsprachige Übersicht zur Psychologie und Psychopathologie der Brandstiftung stammt von 1955. Einige dort unberücksichtigte psychiatriehistorisch wichtige Arbeiten seien erwähnt: In der deutschen Romantik führte Osiander den Begriff der Brandstiftungsmonomanie ein, die er zu den Monomanien im Sinne Esquirols zählte. Platner und Henke erweiterten die Lehre von der Pyromanie und nahmen an, daß letztere besonders Jugendliche in ländlichen Dienstverhältnissen aus Heimweh und "Drängnissen des Blutes heraus" zu impulsiven Brandstiftungen treibe. Von 1824 bis 1851 verpflichtete ein Reskript des preußischen Justizministeriums sämtliche Amtsärzte und Richter, bei jeder Brandstiftung und insbesondere bei Brandstiftungen Jugendlicher, auf die unter Umständen vor harter Strafe schützende Pyromanie zu achten. Unter dem Einfluß einer Abhandlung von Casper, die die Pyromanie zum Gespenst erklärte, das nur in deutschen Landen gewütet habe, während in England und Frankreich keine derartigen Fälle beobachtet worden seien, und eines Gutachtens der wissenschaftlichen Deputation in Berlin wurde das Reskript wieder aufgehoben. Willers-Jessen referierte die gesamte Literatur und folgerte, daß es keinen spezifischen Brandstiftungstrieb gäbe. Kraepelin beschränkte seine Ausführungen ausdrücklich auf Brandstiftungen durch Geisteskranke, wo sie hauptsächlich bei angeborenen und erworbenen Störungen der Intelligenz und bei den eigentlichen psychischen Krankheiten im Rahmen von Wahnideen oder "pathologischer Affekte", namentlich depressiver Natur, zu beobachten seien. Später räumte er unter Bezugnahme auf Jaspers dem Heimweh ein häufigeres Vorkommen bei der Genese pathologisch motivierter Brandstiftungen ein, betonte jedoch auch das Vorkommen motivisch gänzlich unklarer Brandstiftungen, die er als Triebhandlungen krankhaften Ursprungs ansah, die bei "körperlich und seelisch unterentwickelten, meist gering verstandesbegabten Individuen in der Entwicklungszeit" aufträten." Im Mittelpunkt dieser Bestrebungen stehen sowohl seine Ideen zu einem Kreislauf der psychischen Lebenstätigkeit wie auch die Studien zu einer Entwicklungsgeschichte der psychischen Krankheiten. In der Therapie dominierte dementsprechend nicht die Behandlung einzelner Zustände, sondern eines ganzheitlichen Krankheitsprozesses, dem Jessen am ehesten durch Diät und physikalische Therapie, dann aber auch durch Arbeit, Erziehung und gezielten Unterricht beizukommen glaubte. Eine ausschlaggebende Rolle spielte bei allem der soziale Aspekt, da kein Leidender so sehr "der Geduld und Nachsicht, der Liebe und Teilnahme seiner Umgebungen" bedürfe als der Gemütskranke. Das wissenschaftliche Programm Jessen's findet bereits in einer frühen Schrift über "Beiträge zur Erkenntnis des psychischen Lebens im gesunden und kranken Zustande" (1831) seinen Niederschlag; auf der Basis eines psychisch-physischen Parallelismus postuliert Jessen den Kreislauf der Nerventätigkeit, wie auch sein Hauptwerk noch dem "Versuch einer wissenschaftlichen Begründung der Psychologie" (1855) gewidmet blieb."
