Hardback. Condición: New. Traditional African narrative forms combined with European modernism.   The stories comprising The Healer, Marek Vadas's first collection, which was originally published in 2006, are steeped in the culture, rituals, and traditions of Africa, blurring the boundaries between dream and reality and peopled with characters whose gender, shape, skin color or even memories may change at a stroke. Nevertheless, Vadas refuses to exoticize this world, and many of the stories, told in pared-down language, blend mythical elements with realistic depictions of harsh living conditions, economic deprivation, and colonial oppression. The narratives unfold from the perspective of their protagonists-children (often orphaned), and men struggling to make ends meet and trying in vain to resist the allure of strong women endowed with magic powers. As a Slovak writer focusing on the African continent, Vadas is a rare voice that helps to build bridges between very different cultures, and now his writing is introduced to the global anglophone readership.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In July 1994, the Canadian Inflammation Society in Toronto hosted a symposium entitled 'Novel molecular approaches to anti-inflammatory therapy' as a satellite of the xnth International Congress of Pharmacology. For several reasons the above topic was singled out and separated from the general Congress. Major advances have recently been made in the understanding of inflammatory mechanisms. These advances serve as the basis for a new generation of therapeutic agents which may potentially alter our approach to inflammatory processes and infectious diseases. The Satellite Symposium focused on recent advances in diversified fields including arachidonate metabolites, actions of cytokines, chemokines, cellular adhesion molecules and novel molecular approaches in the therapy of inflammation. Scholarly addresses were presented by eminent experts in their respective fields. In this book are included 17 papers which describe in detail novel approaches to the study of inflammation. We hope that this book will serve not only as a summary of present knowledge, but will stimulate both scientists and clinicians to continue their efforts to battle inflammatory diseases. W. Hardback. Condición: New. The Economy of Medieval Hungary is the first concise, English-language volume about the economic life of medieval Hungary. It is a product of the cooperation of specialists representing various disciplines of medieval studies, including archaeologists, archaeozoologists, specialists in medieval demography, historical hydrologists, climate and environmental historians, as well as archivists and church historians. The twenty-five chapters of the book focus on structures of medieval economy, different means and ways of human-nature interactions in production, and offer an overview of the different spheres of economic life, with a particular emphasis on taxation, income and commercial activity. Thanks to its interdisciplinary character, this volume is a basic handbook for the history of economy, production and material culture.Contributors are Krisztina Arany, László Bartosiewicz, Zoltán Batizi, Anna Zsófia Biller, Péter Csippán, László Daróczi-Szabó, Márta Daróczi-Szabó, István Draskóczy, István Feld, László Ferenczi, Erika Gál, Márton Gyöngyössy, István Kenyeres, István Kováts, András Kubinyi, Kyra Lyublyanovics, Árpád Nógrády, Éva Ágnes Nyerges, István Petrovics, Zsolt Pinke, Beatrix F.
